Hey all,

I have only moderate-to-low skill to Linux so am having some trouble deciding the best course of action.

I have a text-mode-only fedora server-type install (done using the appropriate installer option). I have a 'complex' CVS installation on it, JBoss, etc, so want to avoid re-installing (badly).

I want to install a GUI. How can I easily "upgrade" my installation? I wish I could chose "x-windows" and "kde" in the installer and have it upgraded for me.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mal.

Ok, because it seems to be an important machine, I wouldn't make anything you didn't test on a test machine.

I am not sure, but try to install a Fedora on a testmachine with only console. Now I would try to install X with yum. It mostly have after-installation-scripts so it may configure it.

But I would never test such things first on a computer you need to work with.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do a little more research and try that out. Do you know what packages/parameters I should try with yum? Will it modify my startup scripts, etc?

Thanks,

Mal.

I can't say what packages to install, I have never done it before. But I have one more idea, if you want more control over the whole thing, you can install the X packages from the CDs with rpm. And yes it could change your startup scripts. Maybe here is someone who allready had done it.
