Leigh writes excellent tutorials that always work perfectly - but they would be extremely intimidating for a new linux user. Isn't it easy enough to package all of those instructions up into a script and serve that to the new guys? Or build it in so it just works automatically?

That could be done, but for this it wouldn't work anyways since there's many places where things could potentially go wrong (libdrm replacement) and the ATI installer itself needs user interaction, so the process on a whole can't be automated. Hopefully ATI will fix their drivers soon, then it's just a matter of "yum install kmod-fglrx" which can be easily automated.
