Ok, friends...please give a hand.

I switched from Mandrake 10 to FC2test3 and now am running FC2 final. I have a first-generation Audigy PCI card that worked under Mandrake after I used harddrake tools to switch from the "audigy" driver to "emu10k1" using OSS instead of ALSA. Now I'm running FC2 and cannot seem to get sound working.

A few key notes: I run KDE as my default desktop. I did the same with Mandrake. I don't know if that has any bearing on the issue whatsoever.

During my fresh re-install of FC2 final this morning, the test sound played beautifully.

I would guess that the newer ALSA technology has some distinct advantages, but I just want to be able to listen to some mp3s and view TV through my tv card from time to time. I can't do that til I get this doggone thing working!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am running Gnome on FC2, and also having soundcard problems. I am using a SB Live! sound card and emu10k1.

Also, when I open the volume control from the panel, the bar slowly goes from wherever i move it to all the way down to no sound. Anyone else experiencing this?

Strangely enough, the Kmix applet that is tied in to alsamixer (basically a gui for it) shows a zillion adjustable elements, but when I had switched over to OSS under Mandrake, it dropped to quite a bit fewer sliders. I hate to use a depricated sound engine like OSS but if that's what works...

I'm just unsure of how to switch my system to OSS under Fedora Core 2. Sndconfig from the old RedHat days (pre 2.6 kernel) is gone.

Also, I ran this:

so, clearly the system knows what card I have. But this is the same type of results I had with Mandrake 10 (and 9.2 for that matter) until I switched the driver to "emu10k1" instead of "snd-emu10k1". I know that sounds nuts, but I think that was the key. I did it under 3 seperate installations of Mandrake and that fixed the problem. Again, I just have no clue on how to do this under Fedora. Its so frustrating.

I read your post (on the other thread here: http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2112 )and learned some great stuff about fedora core sound controls and configuration - however...I found that my mixer controls were all unmuted and set to volume levels that were fine under normal operation.

How can I switch from using an ALSA driver to an OSS driver - OR...perhaps much better - please help me figure out this wierd issue I have with ALSA (if it is indeed the root of the problem).

I had the exact same problem with FC2. However, I found that in my case it was a very trivial problem: under kmix, I check the advanced checkbox at the bottom and disabled Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack. You might have already tried that, but just in case...

I had this same problem. Installed FC5, Audigy 1 card stops working, but does work with Windo$.
As someone pointed out, I started /usr/bin/alsamixer in a terminal window and turned
Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack OFF, repeat OFF. This is a toggle switch also marked Audigy A, the fourth switch from the right. (It's necessary to scroll the picture by pushing the right arrow.)
