Ok ,
My new notebook now does not seem to like Fedora Core 2
I have WinXP Pro already installed..I boot from disk and use disk druid to partition the rest of the hard drive for Linux FC2. Everything looks great as I load the OS from the CD's.
I then get to the end of the installation process where it tells me to restart my system and then the screen goes blank and then starts getting some crazy shards or purple and blue - looks very trippy like and nothing happens - kind of like the system is frozen - no control caps delete or escape.
I have to just hold down the power key till she dies and then reboot - I see my dual boot screen and select Linux again - I can see it loading the kernel and then the screen where it brings everything up with all the green [pass] next everything then I just get a dead black screen...???
I don't understand what is wrong? Why would linux FC2 not load on this particular notebook. I thought hardware is hardware is hardware...
Is this just a crazy scenario where Linux FC2 will not work on my notebook & I should try another distro or is there something I can look into?
Maybe it is the dual boot with XP? Should I dump XP and do a full linux partition

I too have been facing problems in installation of Fedora Core 1 & 2 on my laptop.
I have :
Acer Aspire 1353 LMI.
Athlon XP 2400,
512MB DDR,
40GB HDD,
ATI Raedon Mobility Adapter
The installer itself hangs abruptly, at various times during the installation. It sometimes hangs at the disk check, sometimes at disk druid, sometimes during installation of files.
I have checked the md5 sums of all the CDs. Have tried downloading and burning new CDs thrice. But it doesnt seem to work.
Any help will be appreciated.

I can't figure this one out ...
Some guy who works for HP says it works fine on all the their notebooks.
I am using PC3200 DDR SD RAM in my notebook (512MB) so I don't think the RAM is an issue.
I don't want to use a other distro as I really like FC2.
I can install all 3 disks with no problem. Its just when the final disk is done and it prompts me to reboot and remove all CD media from the drive...when she starts loading back up I get some trippy looking screen.
I assume this is an XSERVER problem but when it hangs, I have no num lock or caps lock response from the notebook and I am not able to control / caps / F1 to get command line.
I am so confused.

hi,
I had installed red hat 9.0 on my ze 5600 laptop.
but it gave some problems.
i did not check with TV-OUT or wireless,
but other things were working fine.
The main problem was it used to hang when I used to connect USB memory stick to it.
and the other problem was I used to get 10 inch display instead of 17 inch.
I don't know why...
does Fedora core 2 work with ze5600,
has anyone tried that ?
Plz help,
Regards,

Hello.
I have the Pavilion ze5604ea, i believe the specs are 'slightly' different, but FC2 & 3 work fine with no problem on my laptop.
If you can live without XP for a while just try formatting everything and going for a pure FC install, just in case the problem is with the partition or the dual boot.
if FC works, then clear everything again and reinstall XP, when installing XP make sure you partition the drive in the XP install process perhaps give XP half.
when you got a working XP install, install FC.

When you where going through the install process, what did you set your vga at?
To me it sounds like FC is trying to load the gui part and then falling over, which is causing your entire system to keel over.
try adding linux 3 to the end of the kernel boot line in GRUB or LILO - this should allow FC to boot without the GUI, if this works, then try system-config-display - may allow you to fix the problem.
Let me know if this helps you at all.
Oh and both people, check out this guide to installing FC2 and Windows XP Pro (http://www.linuxjourney.com/modules/articles/article.php?id=17) this article should cover most things with dual booting FC2 as well as 3, or try this article installing FC3 (http://www.linuxjourney.com/modules/articles/article.php?id=23)

I think that your lap top is like my zv5260 in that it has an nvidia graphics chip. The driver for nvidia that cvmes with X has problems. The nvidia driver works with core 3 inststalls, so check out http://www.linux-laptop.net/ for ow to remedy this problem with your distro.
