hi folks
after installation of fedora 9 from disk labeled contains all latest updates I have had problems running the program. certain things seem to work ok but others...no luck. for instance when I try to install from disk the other add-ons(packages) I get error message repositories not available or local install not permitted, or permissions do not allow you to do this. I was in root and when I logged on got message of logging on as privileged user. when I check permissions on root get error messages that permissions could not be determined. also have received a message that <localhost> was not an acceptable host name. my regular logon is /home/jevans. my root logon is /root/jevans. when doing this iN root I have tried from /root/jevans with same results and also changing to /root with same results.
I am a rank beginner with linux but my desire is to learn to use the system. when I tried to install a package using package installer got message I did not have privileges to do this...this was from cddrive. I copied the packages into my root directory with same results. I have seen that when I click on the system and add/remove software I should get a dialog box with large squares in upper left corner of dialog box with choices of add software on the upper box and remove software on the lower. I do not get this choice. what I get is a dialog box with three choices on title bar <System Filters Help>. so where do I go from here...should I start with a new installation? have gone the rescue route with no improvement. from the system choice I get local install not permitted or you do not have proper permissions for this. also tries rpm with localinstall same result and messages.
when I click the system choice on the above I get a dialog box with entries with check marks in some squares and others blank. clicking on any of these gives a message I can only enable or disable entries...I have tried neither to avoid further screwing up system. install not permitted message.
