Linus Torvalds has released the Linux 2.6.8 stable kernel.
+ 2.6.8.1 patch has been released. It's a NFS bug (a typo) fix.
So if you are using NFS, you should update to 2.6.8.1

Had a related question : What is a Vanilla Kernal

Thanks

a vanilla kernel is a plain kernel from kernel.org, just the way Linus intended it. It has no distro patches in it lke the RH/Fedora ones.

[edit] so...anyone tried it yet? any interesting/exciting changes in this kernel? I hear there is no 2.7 branch planned anytime soon with new features being added into the 2.6 branch in the meantime.

I'm running it now.
Don't know about any interesting/exciting changes.
The changelog is too much to read :) and kerneltrap.org still didn't pop up the news.
They usually write the important changes...

I'll wait for up2date. :)

This vanilla kernel thing probably originated here in the U.S. where the regular flavor of ice cream is vanilla.

The strange thing is I don't seem to find anything about it in fedora-announce-list. Hmm...

It only appeared in the updates dir a few hours ago. I'm sure an announcement will follow shortly.

Any problems with it?

Just installed the new one here, running fine so far! Had to reinstall the nvidia driver but that's consistant with all new kernels, just a bit of a pain... hehe.

Regards,

Neil. :)

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-267
2004-08-20
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Product : Fedora Core 2
Name : kernel
Version : 2.6.8
Release : 1.521
Summary : The Linux kernel (the core of the Linux operating system)
Description :
The kernel package contains the Linux kernel (vmlinuz), the core of any
Linux operating system. The kernel handles the basic functions
of the operating system: memory allocation, process allocation, device
input and output, etc.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:

This update kernel updates the Fedora Core 2 kernel to version 2.6.8.
Included in this new upstream kernel are several fixes on the networking
front, including traffic shaping and window scaling fixes.

Note: This kernel includes several Execshield cleanups and changes, and as a
result programs that make certain restrictive assumptions about the virtual
address space (such as Wine) need a different workaround than before.
The applications can get the old (legacy) VA layout via the
setarch -L <application>
option when a recent enough serarch application is in use, in addition there
now is a global switch to go to the legacy VA layout:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/legacy_va_layout

While I haven't pesonaly tested this, the K3B developers claim that the 2.6.8.x kernels
have caused K3B to stop burning. Especially when dealing with audio CDs.

Please see http://www.k3b.org/ for more info.

Thread split, avatar issue is here (http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21254). Let's keep to 2.6.8 now, OK?

On topic: I'm running 2.6.8 now, just had to rebuild nVidia rpms. NTFS even works now. :)

Hey, I am a noobie. I just installed FC2 and up2date picked up and installed the new kernel. I also downloaded the Nvidia driver, but I have not it installed yet. (I'm still tinkering under the hood to see what goes where. :) )

coupla questions:

1) if I run the Nvidia installer running the 2.6.8 kernel will it recompile itself to go with the new kernel? The kernel is newer than the driver. (I am referring to the actual Nvidia installer and not RPMs.)

2) I seem to remember reading something about having some files for the new kernel in a certain location /usr/??? in order to install the Nvidia driver with the new kernel. Can you explain that for me or point me to another thread?

3) what about the CD Burner issue with K3B?? Have you tested to see if it will work? If not, is the best workaround to go back to an earlier kernel or run a different CD burner program. I've heard K3B is the best.

BTW, my system is a Gateway P4, 2.6 GHz, 60 gig HD, Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440. FC2 dual booting with XP using Grub. I use both Gnome and KDE because I have not made up my mind about which is best for me.

Thanks. :D
