I'm considering a new scanner; but, I noticed that some are more Linux-friendly than others. In fact, the hp 3970 that I have now will not run in fedora 8 without a back-end executable that bypasses SANE entirely.
What is your favorite scanner to use with Fedora 8?
What is so great about it?
How long have you been using it?
Thanks

If you go by the results of a poll that is worded like this, you will probably end up with something that doesn't work.
If you want to know what scanners will work in sane, you should be reading this: http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html

Thanks for the feedback. Using that site (http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-hp3900.5.html), I had downloaded that backend for the hp3970 that I own. It provides me with an icon that I can click on to scan a document. Unfortunately it does not allow SANE to find the scanner, I can only scan using the icon. Of course, I could be doing something completely wrong. On the site referenced it lists an hp 3970c and says that it runs "Good"; but, I cannot get it to run with sane at all. The hp3070 may have a different chip-set than the 3970c and need another driver; but, no specific listing is given for an hp3970 on that site: (http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-HEWLETT-PACKARD). If that is the case, I'm on the market for a new scanner.
Regarding the poll. I would like it to produce the best results possible so rewording it would be fine with me. My goal is to find out what scanners people are actually using with Linux and what their individual successes have been with them rather than what a tabulated web-site suggests. I'm new to Fedora and still learning about how this OS works. Already, I prefer it to Windows; but, I do need a functional scanner.
Best regards,
-Dave

I was unable to get Fedora 8 to run the scanner (hp3970). But fedora 9 x86_64 found the scanner using SANE at first boot.
Thanks for your help, In this case, use Fedora 9 is the easiest for me to do.

I bought a Cannon LiDE 25 because it was supported, it was cheap, and I knew the name! So far (touches wood) it's worked fine.
I did have a funny experience when I installed a new HP printer, though: the scanner stopped working. I eventually found that hplip was seizing control, deciding that it didn't recognise the scanner, and killing Sane. The solution was to disable hplip, which the printer doesn't seem to miss.
