Hi. I'm gonna buy a new pc in a few days. The store i'm gonna buy it from owe me some money and the selection of computers are limited. Nevertheless it has to be one of their computers.

I read something a few days ago where a guy couldn't install Fedora because of some ATI chipset and an unsupported harddisk controller. I wouldn't want to bring my new PC home only to find out i was stuck with Vista :(

The computers i had in mind:

(Danish info site, a little easier to figure out IMO): http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/dk/da/ho/WF06b/12454-12454-3329740-64546-64546-3733085-3760873.html

And:

The HP one is my first choise but if they don't have that one in stock i will choose the other one.

Will there be any problems install Fedora on these machines? I wan't to run Compiz-Fusion and want to try out XP with wmvare if possible, though not important.

Thank you :)

Going with Linux?
You might want to look around here a bit, things kinda lean the nVidia way.
Are you considering RAID? You might want to look around here a bit. A lot of the boards and cards that claim to "support" Linux don't measure up when it comes to real world experience. Some have very old drivers that do not work with new kernels, and fedora is all about being NEW.

That's my 2 cents.
Best of Luck,
Pat Jr.

Yes i'm installing Fedora first thing. I made sure that the computers i had in mind allready had nVidia cards as it has worked very well on my laptop. This might seem kinda ****ed but i have no idea what Raid means as i have only used laptops before, but this time i want something better and the option to upgrade someday if i choose, instead of buying a new computer.

If the two systems are within €200 of each other I'd say go with the HP Pavilion a6551.sc but if that system is greater than €200 of the Acer Aspire M5630 then go with it instead provided you can swap the ATI card for an Nvidia card.

The only thing I see missing is any wireless capability (or did I miss it).

Hmm the Acer one on the shops homepage says that it has a nVidia card. Diddn't notice it on the Cnet page before now. nVidia seems like the way to go when using Linux i have only heard bad things when using ATI cards.

Both computers costs exactly the same so i guess the HP is the one to choose if there are no problems with the hardware when installing Linux?

It doesn't seem that there are any wireless support but i don't need that. My laptop has WL and still i choose to plugin the cable instead.

Hey bought that HP computer today. Fedora installed fine and i'm using it now :)

I installed Fedora 8 because that was the only copy i could find... (at home) Now i would like to add all the repositories that i had on my old computer. Normaly i would follow this guide http://www.fedorafaq.org/#getsoftware and use his configuration. But it doesn't work with FC8 anymore and preupgrade will only let me upgrade to FC10 and i think his configuration only works with FC9.

What do i do about that? I need the kmod-nvidia, compiz-fusion and Amarok packages for starters.

Any help will be appriciated :)
