Promoting GIMP?

GIMP will do most the things that Photoshop does.
(I tried PS before; it is TOTALLY a resource hog, and crushes A LOT.)
But probably you need to learn it thoroughly before convincing others to use it.

Use Blender in conjunction with the GIMP! <..:p..>

A little tough to learn, but ... Oh My, you should see the results!

Combine the GIMP with OpenOffice.org Draw and you will be able to do pretty much anything you want with a graphics program.
