Someone just posted this to the linux-sony mailing list: laptop-mode made its way into the 2.6 kernel.
laptop-mode.txt
Laptopmode is used to minimize the time that the hard disk needs to be spun up,
to conserve battery power on laptops. It has been reported to cause significant
power savings.
See Documentation/laptop-mode.txt in the kernel sources. There are ACPI scripts at the bottom of the file to enable laptop-mode when the AC-adapter is unplugged.

And for German speakers, there is a tutorial at http://www.pl-berichte.de/t_system/hd-laptop-shutdown.html

the documentation says that it is a script that works both in 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. so, if you run it in 2.4, it should work
