View Full Version : Using Fedora 10?

I've been using Fedora 10 since the beta release and as of a few days ago I've dumped Fedora 9 to use the partition for playing with other Linux distros. So I've made the switch to Fedora 10 permanent, even though it's not final, and its been running rock solid for me. Anyone else already moved to 10 on a permanent basis yet?

Hi G, i made the step as well. Working on F10 since last week and all works excellent.

The only problem i encounter is that it is very slow (boot, nautilus, all). Same hardware as F9 which was very fast.

Boots the same as 9 for me. Minor issues like sessions doesn't remember programs running, for example, GKrellm never starts automatically as it should because it was running when I logged out. Desktop icons do not remain arranged properly, so the first thing I do when I log in is to start GKrellm and arrange desktop icons. Minor details. Other than that all is good in Fedora land.

Running the beta since release on my secondary desktop without issue. Clean install over 9 on my main desktop yesterday. Printer, blackberry, camera's, etc... all working. Games all playing fine. Permanent for me.

Fairly or unfairly I despised the evil that was F9, I would jump ship rather than go back.

Dumped F9 the day the alpha was released. Been a Happy Computer ever since. Nvidia card runs just fine, It takes an OverClock just great. Also returned to KDE once again and have had no problems at all. Just wish that I had installed it on an Ext4 instead of a Ext3 drive. Update Rawhide Every day and just rock solid... :)

BlackBerry? I haven't even bothered to plug mine in. Yours charges and you can sync address book, etc?

Did you manage to get around the Mesa/OpenGL fog bug? And if so, how?

Not as good experience here. I tried the first beta once it was released in one of my three machines and got so impressed that upgraded the other two at once, using preugrade or dvd. Big mistake . I was forced to do full re installations on each one :(. After rc3, everything seems to be rock solid . My main concerns are the traditionally Fedora ones: screen resolution (always), and sound (sometimes). Next time I will not jump so soon and wait for at least a couple of release candidates .

I installed Fedora-beta-10 on my desktop and experienced no problems installing and working with this distribution. Installing same on my Packard Bell EasyNote is a different matter altogether. I have to use "no apic, acpi=off" in order to install any Linux distribution.
This also worked for Fedora 10 but soon after the installing session started I got a message that it was impossible to continue in graphical mode so I choose the possibility of installing in text mode. All went fine until the machine had to reboot in order to finalize the installation. The result was a black screen with at the bottom of same the figure "9.91". Rebooting learned that the installation had actually taken place except for the graphical screen.
I'm absolutely no expert on Linux and wonder if anyone can help me in this matter. Fedora 10 is important to me as it supports my usb wireless card.

I haven't had any problems with doom3 on F10 .

UT2004 does not work natively due to a bug in mesa's fog calculations.

Mesa 7.3-devel implementation error: radeon_program_pair.c::allocate_input_registers(): Don't know how to handle inputs 0x8

Go to the The free desktop bugzilla entry (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17929) for more information about it.

I've been using F10 since Alpha and have taken all available updates along the way. I'm having no problems of any consequence here, at this point in time. I do note about a 100 MB increase in average RAM usage over F9 but haven't really bothered to investigate at this point and probably won't until I've evolved to F10 Final.

I do intensive and extensive graphics work and F10 has been up to the task for my personal requirements. I also do a lot of experimentation and navigating in uncharted waters. F10 has withstood all that so far. On the flipside. I'm not a gamer, etc. so I cannot vouch for or condemn F10 in that area.

I will interject that I am finding evolving with the development of F10 to be a much more rewarding experience then simply waiting until the completed release is available. No big surprises and initial irritants like I had when upgrading to F8 & F9. From what I am seeing though, big surprises and initial irritants may be minimal for the average person that decides to upgrade to F10 once it's final. Kudos to the development crew. Of course issues will still be present but Fedora is always a work in progress and such issues should be expected and understood. I have no real qualms with F9 in its current state but I've moved on.

That's my personal take on F10 and I can only speak for me. I'm sure others see things differently and are having different experiences.

Hi All,
Since my (troubled) last try to do a release upgrade (I can't remember if it was FC2 to FC3 or FC4 to FC5), I have always done a clean install when a new release comes out.
Do you think an upgrade from F9 to F10 can be considered reasonably stable? Or the majority of you are doing clean installs on new releases? Is there any poll on this?
Thanks.

a clean install is best than a Upgrade .that way you wont run into Dependency headaches

Thanks Demz.
I just found this great thread: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=174492&highlight=choose+packages+install
Summary: put your /home on a different partition and do a clean install all the time.

I have done clean install.. I tried all major distro... except debian..
Tried ubuntu -- Was quicker than before, ran smooth... but frankly, I dont like the name :P hahaha...
Tried Mint -- Its winter, mint was good with its functionalities but getting wifi to work was a headache... tried madwifi, worked! but wanted to switch...
Tried CentOS -- Looked at graphics and restarted without checking anything...
Tried Zenwalk -- Computer never booted up...
Tried OpenSolaris -- As my friend ordered free cd on my address, took 8 hours to install on my i586...
Tried Fedora 10 KDE Beta -- Finally the rock has come back!! updated to new KDE... graphics.. man I found my love... but then I am not flexible with KDE...
Format -- Install Fedora 10 GNOME Beta
Fedora 10 GNOME Beta -- Satisfied...
Except for the mic, I cannot use my skype, cannot call my mom and dad, cannot speak to my friends :-(
waiting for updates, and final release hope it works, else you will find this as a thread someday "Mic not working in Fedora 10".

So, far happy with whatever, distrowatch shows many unstable elements but havent experienced so far and whatever I had, I uploaded as bugs in bugzilla.

Cheers guys!
