View Full Version : Fedora 2 Servers Are Live!

The Fedora Core 2 servers are up and accessible now. Head on over to the Fedora mirror page (http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html) and select the mirror closest to you before downloading.
Its not worth trying to download the ISOs from http://fedora.redhat.com/ that server is likely to be jammed for the next 72 hours.
All Core 2 questions can now be asked in the standard support forums here at Fedora Forum. Core 1 questions will still be supported in the support forum, but it would be of great help if questions indicate which core edition is being addressed. In 4 weeks time a seperate Legacy Core 1 forum will be created exclusively for Core 1 questions. So that support is still available.
Enjoy the new core edition folks and don't forget to help each other out in the forums!

Here are a couple of mirrors, that are complete:
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/r...ore/2/i386/iso/
ftp://ftp.crihan.fr/mirrors/fedora....ore/2/i386/iso/
ftp://ultra.linux.cz/pub/fedora/2/i386/iso/
They all have the dvd iso, and also the normal cd ones.

You have to go into the Core 2 Folder and then into an ISO one.
Due to the firewall I'm behind, I can't go to FTP sites so I can't tell you exactly. But thats where i saw it on HTTP mirrors.

Since all (active) German mirrors are pathetically jammed, i gave the 'Torrent' a try:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
file: tettnang-binary-i386-iso
size: 2,285,617,943 (2.1 GB)
dest: /home/pigpen/tettnang-binary-i386-iso
progress: #########_________________________________________ ________________
status: finishing in 2:20:09 (14.3%)
speed: 295.3 KB/s down - 15.7 KB/s up
| totals: 308.3 MB down - 21.1 MB up
Seems it was well worth it! :-)

NOT 100% sure here but I mounted the rescuecd.iso using daemon tools, searched the readme and release notes for "rescue" and came up with this:
Memory testing may be performed prior to installing Fedora Core by entering memtest86 at the boot: prompt. This causes the Memtest86 standalone memory testing software to run. Memtest86 memory testing continues until the Esc key is pressed.
NOTE: You must boot from CD-ROM 1 (or a rescue CD-ROM) in order to use this feature.
Nonetheless I assume it's a bootable CD for booting up a non-bootable system for - you guessed it, rescuing a system.
BTW I installed FC2 just fine without having to use this disk.
I wonder why not use CD1 as the rescue disk? Perhaps this rescue CD has more features?

Some mirrors can't go along with such big files, and display the size wrong(it's the ftp server admin fault)
But you can check my first post here for a couple of mirrors that support it the right way :)

What do the md5checksum say for each file? Are they the same?
I imagine the 4.1 gig file has source rpms in it.

@Igoraus and others who prefer the command line to GUIs. (Igoraus: What do you use right now?)
Go to: http://torrent.dulug.duke.edu/
and follow the instructions on the bottom of the page. And don't forget to poke holes in your firewall, so others will benefit from your bandwidth as well. You can limit the upload speed with --max_upload_rate <number of kb/s>.
I limited mine to 15kb/s and have 467.5 KB/s download speed by now. I can hardly contain myself :D

Does anyone know already if there is an apt-database on the cdrom isos?
If not, does someone provide this database (like ccrma did for fedora core 1) to create apt-enabled isos form the original isos?

Since i'm currently on Win2k, i'm using a download manager.
Torrent didnt really work here, i was trying to download the CD-Images, not the DVD because i dont have the possibillity here at work to write dvds... and i still have to stay 6+ hours here :D
I'll wait until my cds are finished, i download using a download manager, currently on 220k/s, whats quite fine for me :)
Then i'll change my workbox to FC2 too :)

I created a simple file with the URL of each ISO I wanted (all of them) and then I used wget -i to get them all.
contents of file:
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-disc1.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-disc2.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-disc3.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-disc4.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-SRPMS-disc1.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-SRPMS-disc2.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-SRPMS-disc3.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-SRPMS-disc4.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-rescuecd.iso
ftp://redhat.secsup.org/pub/linux/redhat/fedora/core/2/i386/iso/FC2-i386-DVD.iso
I just logged into someones FTP server and got the list and then created my url file. I don't like baby sitting each download.
I called my file "fc2iso.urls" so my command looks like:
wget -i fc2iso.urls
That's all. I'm getting between 200 and 300 KB/s (about 2.5 Mb/s) on a 3 Mbs ADSL connection. Not bad.

OK, just installed fedora core 2 the other day (unofficial torrent), my first go with fedora/redhat, coming from gentoo:D.
Anyways, as I followed directions to get /etc/yum.conf setup, I dont see any repositories with yum directories for fedora core 2 except livna. I downloaded the xmms-mp3 thank god, and they now have lame up there too, but I need a few other things like ntfs module, xine, irssi, etc. Should I download these rpm's from anywhere? Is it a sin not to use yum when installing rpms? I know it makes dependencies easier, but just wondering, I dont want to make a mess of a fresh install.
I tried to install irssi from the fedora 2 rpm stable directory over at fedora.us by manually installing rpm, but I got an error that I needed libgc, where is the best place to get this from? Or should I just wait a few days and the yum repositories will popup? Thanks, im impatient, but I did rtfm, just need opinions for best practices.

It's great, just great... FC2 I mean :)
Installation went smooth.
And I have this feeling that it's faster than test3, I think it is..
Great job Fedora crew.

Hey does anyone know how to boot up the install CDs with a floppy disk system?
My system doesn't have the ability to boot from CD.
And before any snobs say the expected thing... I thought Linux was SUPPOSED to work on legacy hardware... right?

I think grub supports network booting (or there is some support for it) that will allow you to boot off of the installation isos off the network.

Bingo. you win the prize. I bought the iso's from linux central ( still waiting for them) and downloaded the rescue. Md5 ok, burned ok, failed to boot. Anaconda script error. Still looking into it. Any help apreicated. New to FC2.
I would like to be able to fix the anaconda script and re-burn. Downloading is a pain here.

Here's the error

Sorry but I'm not allowed to start a new thread yet. Hope somebody sees this.

I've downloaded all 4 iso but the file size are not the same as stated on the site. Odd thing is when i do a MD5Sum check all is ok. That is to say they (the MD5Sum) are the same. That would make me think it's a good download. Do I really have a good download? Or should I down load again? Do I have a problem?

Just answered my own question. Did a "media check" when all 4 disks were burned. They all passed. So I thought- since the md5sum check and the media check said they were ok- who am I to disagree. I lnstalled FC2. Went off like a charm. Execpt for two error messages, which alowed me to retry, and was accepted, I've had no problems. Now to explore!!!
