the standard kernel 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 and the smp one don't boot. the seem to work up untill the usb part and then it just hangs there. hardware config:
P4 2.8 hyperthreading
intel D865perl mobo
geforce 5200 video agp
250gb sata, raid 1
mouse and keyboard are using usb

try add paramater pci=noacpi noapic to kernel command line (try some combinations).

how about your previous kernel? does it boot up fine?

i am using usb keyboard and mouse too and i have 3 kernel and it works fine in all of them but try using what circulus suggested...

yes, the previous kernel worked fine, well the standard one did anyway. the smp 2.6.5 and 2.6.6 kernels wouldn't boot. something about a null reference, but I had an thread about that earlier, to which no one replied... in any case, when I get back to that computer, I will try your noapic advice.
