???????
what happens when you put a dvd ( data disk or movie -- ie. The Terminator) or even the install dvd

for a data dvd, like the install dvd, you should get a icon for it on your desktop .

do you have two drives one a dvd and the , the not seen, one is a cd/dvd drive

even if i put any disk, i can read it
so you CAN read a cd put into the drive ??? -- if so then it is working.
what is listed in the folder , on your desktop, called "computer"

in the services
System / Administration / services
is the "haldaemon " running ?
is there a error message in the system logs
/var/log/dmesag
/var/log/messages

wow, it was a mistake from me .... the CDROM drive can't read any disk ... it's not even listed in my computer folder. how will i get it there? it not part of my hardware list .... but what's surprising me is that it was the same drive dat i used in installing it ...
