I think it might be a problem with my PulseAudio and ALSA configuration because I uninstalled and reinstalled packages but I don't know what as I am new to linux.
I had sound working when I first installed fedora 9 but after installing and uninstalling some media players I have lost it.

I might try
yum install *alsa* --exclude=balsa
that should solve any missing alsa packages, also make sure you thoroughly check your volume controls ( aka. unmute everything )

Ok thanks for the help, I have all the alsa packages now but I still don't have sound. I checked all the volume controls I could find to make sure none were muted but no go.
Seems like my flash plugin will not work anymore either... and I followed http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f9.html#flash
I think the media player I uninstalled in the beginning was KDEmultimedia package
