It is nice to see VIA finally getting their Open Source act together, hopefully they'll learn from the errors AMD has done during their Open Source enterprise and will minimize discontent. I also hope they will be able to work out the problems that prevent the release of stuff such as Video Acceleration, codec and 3D (as AMD has painfully slowly done). All in all, these are good news, you could say that the major chipset and CPU makers all have an open source strategy for video products, probably being the most relevant one AMD (due to ATi), but now AMD, Intel and VIA all have such an strategy in place. It will be interesting if their efforts and leadership prove other IHVs that openly supporting Linux and Open Source is a Good Thing™ to do (yes, I'm looking at you nVIDIA!). Even Atheros is now officially supporting Linux and Open Source.

yes, I think they're minor steps, but they indeed ARE steps. Maybe one day we'll really have a fair driver support :)

Too little too late ? I wonder if it's not just a marketing facelift. Now everyone promotes green products, because it's trendy. Now everyone supports FOSS. Now everyone starts using a bike and leaves their cars at home - to save the planet
