Hey there -

I have both a crappy VIA onboard sound chip and an EMU10K1 sound card from Creative. When I try to listen to music in Fedora, only the VIA chip works, but I'd really prefer to use my sound card. However, when I plug my speakers into the sound card, I hear nothing. How can I change this?

BTW, the card works fine under Windows, so it's not a hardware problem.

Have you tried System>Administration>Soundcard Detection?

I'm using the XFCE spin. Where do I find that?

in the terminal, issue:system-config-soundcard

bash: system-config-soundcard: command not found

...sorry. Do you have any other idea?

In XFCE, from the main menu, click on: System > Soundcard Detection

There is no such entry in my system menu... am I doing anything wrong?

No package system-config-soundcard available.
Nothing to do

Didn't work either. :(

No, you are not doing anything wrong. Just do what Ivancat suggested, "yum install system-config-menu", and then you will have that item in your menu. The soundcard detection program was included in my F8/XFCE spin.

Hello,
I am experimenting with my sound card also. I have similar set up with the on-board and a pci sound card. I tried every command you guys have suggested and i get the same negative result. I have F9 sulphur.
I would like to list all my hardware...
Any luck with that yet mabool?

Since I don't use F9, I'll retreat here and let those that are using it sort things out.

Since I don't use F9...

That's amazing, but I run F8 as well (with GNOME)

Now back to topic. I have run a small research and have found out that there is no system-config-soundcard package for fedora 9, according to release notes it has been removed. So, what's the alternative?

Here's what I can offer to try: try making it work by selecting your creative card using gnome-sound-properties (if you have that, just try gnome-sound-properties in the console)

Another variant that comes to my mind: disabled your on-board audio card in bios, so for fedora it looks like you have only one card. There's a chance it will do the trick.

Try these two and tell us the results

I don't have gnome-sound-properties.
Turning off the onboard sound chip didn't work either (but has the added disadvantage that I can't hear anything anymore)

Hi Mabool,

I tried the same things. I do have the gnome sound properties. They are on my fedora 9 at "system/preferences/hardware/sound" in there I get a series of choices for audio configuration.
I also tried the bios thing, but I was not able to find a switch. So I didn't do anything there.
What mine is doing now, on my on-board audio I have some sounds like you tube and other internet streaming, and on my pci audio card I get other sounds. I did loose my sound on a game I experiment with on both, this is he one wine thing I use, and I lost my system sounds, like beeps and stuff like that.
Now that I look at this note, I realise that it is of no help. I will stand by for someone who actually knows something about this to help us. I will post something If I figure something out.
