Can someone tell me if epiphany uses now the webkit backend?

I believe it's possible if you compile it yourself or something. It's not supposed to be part of vanilla Epiphany until 2.24 or 2.26, I believe.
In the meantime, you can use Midori (available in the repos) if you need it for Web development.

GNOME upstream decided not to use Webkit until the next release so Epiphany is still using the Gecko engine by default.

You can use Epiphany with WebKit just now (2.22) - it's compiled in Tigro repository using WebKit: http://mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/tigro/9/x86_64/epiphany-webkit-2.22.1.1-1.fc9.2.x86_64.rpm
