Hi, I have been running Fedora 4 on an old laptop for some time, but decided to re-install Fedora using Fedora 9, and have run into a problem as follows:

I downloaded and burnt to CD the F9 CD ISOs. I put the first one in the CD drive and start the laptop. It boots up from the CD and at the Welcome screen, I select the first Install option. It seems to start the installation process OK.

At the Choose a language screen, I select English.
At the keyboard screen, I select us.
At the Installation Method screen, I select Local CD/DVD.

Now I get a screen which says No driver found, and the three options are Select driver, Use a driver disk, and Back. If I choose the Select driver option, then I get the Select Device Driver to Load screen and a long list of drivers to select from. I have tried a number of these that might be suitable for the CD drive, but whatever I select, I always get a No Driver found screen which tells me that "Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type..."

Am I right in thinking that I should be selecting a driver for the CD drive at this point and if so, does anyone know which driver I should select?

This is doubly frustrating in that I have had Fedora 4 installed on this machine before and obviously the initial boot process has happily found the CD drive and so I'm not clear why the installation is having a hard time seeing the CD driver (if indeed this is what the problem is). Thanks for any help. Martin

Can you tell me your HW configuration, the laptop model and the mainboard? Try to search google for conflicts with this hardware.

Hi - I am working with a Toshiba Satellite Pro 470CDT. It is a laptop with one HD, one CD-ROM drive, and an external floppy drive. It does not have an ethernet port: just room for two PCMCIA cards.

Since yesterday, I have investigated some more as follows:
(a) I tried installing Ubuntu and Gentoo and both seem to hit the same problem as with Fedora: that the CD drive is not recognized once the installation process starts up
(b) I swapped out the CD drive for a different, newer, one and see the same behavior
(c) I can boot up using a Knoppix live CD without any difficulty
(d) I have tried various combinations of boot parameters (pci=biosirq, noacpi, and the like) without seeing any difference in behavior.
(e) I also tried to specify performing a network install, but I get the same message about not having the right driver installed.

Google searches seem to suggest problems with identifying the CD drive with SATA and so on, but my BIOS options are somewhat limited: in particular there is no mention of SATA in the BIOS screens: just IDE and EIDE for the hard drive.

It's very frustrating - particularly because the machine can obviously use the CD as it boots up, but the installation process seems to lose sight of it!

Thanks for any help, Martin

I also have a Toshiba laptop, and I also have the exact same problem. Whats odd is that I don't always get this error. I've gotten it to go past this screen and start the installation.. er, rather I can get past that screen and try to setup the installation (then I would get stuck because I did not have a valid partition to install Fedora on).

Anybody have tips? Should I choose a driver? If so, how do I know which driver to choose?

Hi, it's been a couple of months since I did this, so I may not have all the details right, but in the end, the only approach that worked for me was installing Ubuntu following the instructions on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromKnoppix

It was not straightforward - mostly through my ignorance on mounting and changing roots and unfamiliarity with Ubuntu, so I had several false starts and much googling before I got the system up and running. There may be an equivalent Fedora approach...

Good luck! Martin

Im using a Toshiba laptop too and hit the same problem. Here's a "fix" (for me) though:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=193464

It says just disable the onboard LAN in the BIOS and then try again - it worked for me but then leaves you with the problem of getting drivers etc. for the LAN with no internet available:P

Hi All
Migrant from Ubuntu.
Downloaded and tested Fedora DVD on main machine in Ubuntu.
Installing on Laptop (Hi Grade Notino R5400)

DVD boots up good.

Ah ... I try to get mouse to click NEXT .. but mouse won't get that far down the screen. It stops 2" above the bottom... naughty mouse.

Using RETURN key to hit NEXT is good... until I change an option with up/down keys.
After that RETURN does not work
Tried every combination of keystrokes i can think of to hit NEXT but nothing does!
Ctrl+Alt+Del closes down machine OK.

Can anyone help me with this very naughty mouse...?

Daf:rolleyes:
