View Full Version : fc2 hangs on intall

I wiped the hd clean on my computer and tried to do a fresh install of FC2. The partitioning and everything went fine, but a couple of minutes into the actual installation, anaconda gets hung up and stops installing packages and i can't move the mouse or do anything with the keyboard. The cd drive seems to still be spinning at a low speed, but the read light is not on.

fedora has no problems detecting my hardware or anything. i always use whatever the recomended partition and file system are (i think it is ext3). then i do a custom package selection.

I've tried to install several times, each time wiping the harddrive clean, and the install has always hung up at the same part of the install process. It doesn't always stop at the same package either. also, i have been trying to install various combinations of packages, but anaconda keeps getting hung up at around the same spot.

When i originally downloaded the iso's, the md5sum's went fine; and the media checks out fine when the install first starts.

cpu specs:

athlon 1200 gHz
keystone mboard (i'm not sure what model)
hitachi dvd rom (master)
lite on cd burner (slave, oh yeah: i've tried to do the intall from either cd drive, and the same thing happens regardless of which drive i use)
40 gb HD
one 128 mb memory stick
one 256 mb memory stick
pci radeon 7000, 64mb

thanks

At the boot prompt when you boot from the CD, try entering the following:

linux acpi=off pci=noacpi

Some machines have trouble installing FC2 when ACPI is enabled. Note that this shouldn't really affect FC2 when it is already installed.

I had a similar problem, the install would randomly failure with a media error at various points. I eventually narrowed it down to a bad stick of RAM. I suggest running mem86test <sp?> from the Install CD 1 and check your RAM.

i tried disabling the acpi, but that didn't work

i tried running that memory checkor, but i couldn't get it to work. are you sure that the syntax is correct? also, do i use it at the very first screen where it says "boot:"?

From the boot prompt, press F2 and then look for the memory test option ... I think you have to type .. linux mem86test .. from memory , hope this helps .

i removed one of the sticks of ram and the install went perfectly, luckily i have two sticks of ram.
