Hi guys
I finely got Linux on my laptop as I was waiting since January till I could get a bigger hard drive for a Fedora/vista dual-boot. I have used Ubuntu for about 4 years and active on there forum as Omnios but have decided to migrate to Fedora, Also heard that Fedora -64 is a bit better with Fedora. Also heard that laptops run hot and have low battery life in Ubuntu. So far cpu temps in Fedora as similar to temps in Vista but can not access hd and fan.
Any ways codecs proved a pain in that totem still wanted to run gstreamer even though I installed totem X-ine, used a install script and that solved all the install problems as I did not want to spend days playing with codec stuff.
Now the problem I am having is that I have the latest -64 kernel and lm sensors are installed according to yum. Problem I am having is that when I try inputing sensors or sensors detect in terminal with user and su I get a command not found error. I have gnome hardware applet and it shows cpu and graphics card temp but know from playing in vista that hdd-tem, fan-speed, cpu, and vid temperature are available. Not shure why sensors command does not work. I need to get this working to keep track of temp etc to see if something goes wrong.
Thanks in advance for the help.

su -c '/usr/sbin/sensors-detect'

su -c '/usr/sbin/sensors-detect'
Thanks that got sensors detect configed and working.
Now having problem with hddtemp.
Installed the hddtemp demon from yum but on boot getting hddtemp error not configed see /etc/sysconfig/hddtemp which does not say anything on how to config it.
Also the info is pretty limited but is the same avaiable in vista. One part that is not detected yet in Fedora is the cpu fan rpm which is viewable in a vista program. Also hddtemp is shown in the vista program.

The file: /etc/sysconfig/hddtemp should contain the line: HDDTEMP_OPTIONS. Add your drive dev node to the end of the line.
For example, on my XPS m1330, the configured line looks like
HDDTEMP_OPTIONS="-l 127.0.0.1 /dev/sda"
Then start the service:
chkconfig --level 35 hddtemp on
service hddtemp start

Managed to get hddtemp working now last thing left is to see if I can get the fan working.

Not sure about the fan(s) on the m1530, but mine throttles as needed. If it's running hot, the fan spins up. Once it's cool enough, the fan slows down to save battery and lower noise.
I did notice that with F9, the fan stays at full unless you have kmod-nvidia from the livna.org repo... Assuming you have an Nvidia card in your laptop.

Thanks bud
I have the kmod nvidia and that repo. I got wondering as I read a post on Ubuntu where someone did not have the fan things isntalled properly on the Ubuntu -64 version. Temps seem pretty similar to those in vista but have only ever heard the fan going full blast while playing games in vista. But the temps are only a few degrees off but find the vid card runs hot either in vista or Fedora.
I would actually like it to run more when hooked up to the power supply though.
Oh ya I have the bulky 9cell battery that props the bottom up on a bit of a angle that actually help a lot with cooling lol.

May i ask what's hddtemp for? It only gives you the temperature?
How different is
hddtemp /dev/sda
from
smart -a /dev/sda | grep Temp
?
Does hddtemp running as a service do something? like error messages, temp warnings..etc
Thanks :)

Yes, the hddtemp service provides a data stream that can be used by most common sensor applets - especially GUI types.

so it only provides data? hmm
i will see if gkrellm will provide temp without hddtemp, if yes than i'll uninstall :)
i suppose the same is with lm-sensors? can you confirm?
just to provide data, no alarms or trigger with it?

You should do some Google searching and visit the project websites to confirm which of these meets your needs.

I couldn't understand and their site is not loading here for me.
But thanks for the hddtemp info. :)
i recommend smartd.

Hi guys, got everything running but the fan speed. I know there is a sensor for it as I had a vista program that shows its rpm.
Ran sensors-detect again and in the end it states
Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done. Just press ENTER to continue: Driver `coretemp' (should be inserted): Detects correctly: * Chip `Intel Core family thermal sensor' (confidence: 9) Do you want to overwrite /etc/sysconfig/lm_sensors? (YES/no):
My /etc/sysconfig/lm_sensors looks like this
# List the modules that are to be loaded for your system # # Generated by sensors-detect on Wed Jul 16 23:43:39 2008 MODULE_0=coretemp
Also there where a few things that where detected as a chip but stated sensors did not know what it was.
I also have read that the fan is from the motherboard so needs a modual in order to access it. Im trying to ofind some reading material on i2c and a few other modules.

But is it working or not?
your /etc/sysconfig/lm_sensors is just like mine.
Are you very sure your fan is not working?
Like jtang613 said,

It's out-of-the-box, you don't need to config this.
The "modual" you are looking for might be i8k wich is designed for DELL laptops.
I get the fan speed with it on gkrellmd (http://www.fedoraforum.org/gallery/showimage.php?i=4521).
yum install i8kutils

The fan is working but I want to be able to see the rpm and fan states possibly with screenlets
tried yum install i8kutils
Does not seem to be in the repos I have main -64 and livna, can you recemend any other repos that do not have dep-hell-problems.

Why didn't you say before :)
I just told you about gkrellmd, try installing it (don't forget the i8kutils).

K think im hitting a wall. Seen listings for i8kutils -386 not nothing ready yet for 65bit
