Fedora 9 has KDE4, which is really a "technology preview" and a lot of stuff from KDE3 has not yet been ported over, so things that use to work in KDE 3.5.x, don't. I think you should look back through the forum for all threads regarding Fedora 9 and KDE before committing yourself. If you are looking for a KDE centric distro, then look at OpenSuse 11, Mandriva or PCLinuxOS too. Although Fedora has been my primary OS since FC5 I can't recommend Fedora 9 + KDE4 to someone just starting out.
Edit: I should also point out that Fedora's primary desktop is Gnome, but KDE4 and XFCE are also available choices.

Man ... I hate to say this ... but unless you plan on installing F8, (not F9) Debian is your better choice.

Fedora 9 is workable for those of us with experience but it is VERY rough around the edges. Unless you are a total masochist it would probably not only turn you off to Linux but would make you HATE Linux!
Ubuntu is another choice, as is Linux Mint. Between all the distros that have been suggested by Wayne, Dan and me, these are all great choices. Personally, I think debian is the "perfect" Linux distro. It is plain jane, vanilla. It is what Linux should be, it is the gold standard. That all said, it isnt the easiest distro to start with either. It is very equivalent to what Fedora is when Fedora is "right." Can you do it? Sure, in fact, you will learn much more in a shorter time using debian. But it isnt as point and click as the others.
My advice? Take what we are telling you to heart and do some further research. Go through forums and see what the Linux community in general is saying. We are a community, Fedora is not in competition with Ubuntu, we are ALL Linux and each distro holds a special place in the grand scheme. If you do decide on Fedora it might not be a totally bad choice, Fedora is an awesome distro. That is why we all use it. Just be warned that it is a mighty big first bite!
