View Full Version : upgrading to FC2

hi there,

now that most mirror actually carry the final FC2 branch, I am wondering how I would bring my 1.92 (test3) installation up to FC2. Is it as simple as entering the repositories into yum.conf and do a yum update? if so, what are all the different RPMS.* directories? like .os, .stable etc.? what is what?

also a lot of people warn to upgrade a test install to the final version, but no one really says why. so: why not?

test or not.. no one would complain upgrading from 1.91 to 1.92... I would suppose that upgrading from 1.9x to 2.0 is just the same thing... ?

Thanks,
Sascha

u can give it a try :)

there can be problems due to package-downgrades cos of the upgrade. some configurations will only be made by anaconda (which is not involved when u just "apt dist-upgrade" meaning LVM for example)

i dont suppose getting in big trouble when u actually use that upgrade option. it's just more save when u choose a real new installions (backing up some config-files and ur homedir)

ok, what changes would anaconda do to my system? what would I miss?

I want to avoid doing a fresh install because a) we are in linux-land, not windows-land, and most important, b) I have made so many changes and installations to my system that I would lose a lot of work and time....

any more thoughts on that? :)

thanks,
sascha

I've upgraded my FC2T3 to FC2, the upgrade was clean, with no problems during or after the upgrade...

would you mind giving me a brief overview of the upgrade process? which repository directories did you use? are there any dramatic changes between FC2T3 and FC2?

thanks,
sascha

that would surprise me. officialy core 2 will be released on may 18th.. so i think u cant have upgraded to core 2 (although u might have allready the core 2 repositories in use cos the mirrors have allready changed the path)

and of course u can upgrade from test3 to core 2.
and probably u would miss nothing. but as this upgrade is neither tested or supported u might end up with some bugfixing (due 2 overwritten config-files) on your todo-list ;)

i dont think that will happen and i think, there will be no problems if u upgrade instead of a new installation, buit as it is neither supported nor tested no 1 can garuantee that it work's without any problems...

sure. got you.
as for upgrading to FC2 NOW, it is possible, the major repositories already carry the FC2 branch.

as much as i want to upgrade right now, i rely on my system too much to not wait. 18th you say... eh, that's not too bad
