yum does a better job at solving dependencies; however apt is faster
for me yum fits the bill perfectly

Yum is what I use. Call me old fashioned but I like a nice cli tool. IT is also good to be able to use the same tool to keep my third party packages up to date.

For my Laptop, I use Yumi/Yum and for my desktop, I use Synaptic/Apt. IMHO, Synaptic/Apt is faster and access to repositories does not give me an error, while Yumi/Yum is slow to get header information and more times than usual I get an error getting header files.

I'm stuck with up2date...FYI Yum is built into Fedora by default. Just open a terminal and typeman yum You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Thread moved. Oh and Apt for me - since Yum is crap on a 56K.

I use up2date to upgrade the base of my systems and yum to take care of the third party applications. up2date tends to hang sometimes, especially when solving dependencies.

I started using yum based on a friends recommendation and I love it. I think if there was a GUI for it, more people would use it.

Up2date. Can't help it. That red thing keep calling to me. For all other things Yum is the way to go. I have used yum before when Up2date did not 'kick off'. Worked just fine. But because the update icon is on the taskbar, it's much easier to do it that way.

up2date is slow, and clunky
there is a GUI for yum http://cobind.com/yumgui.html

It has been discussed and there is a gui interface for yum called yumi and here is a screenshot

Combinations of apt/Synaptic, yum/yumi and up2date (GUI and --nox). It's a practical decision - if up2date is being, uh, sluggish, then I'll try the others. I agree with AliOop - that "red thingie" is right there and it ought to work, dammit! But even when it doesn't, it still serves to notify that something's afoot - and that's when I call out the CLI stuff.
BTW - I've had surprisingly good results lately in running up2date with the --nox option from the command line lately...

Ooo, a checkbox poll! Good thing, because I do everything but install from source. (Although I will do that if there are no rpms available.)
I usually use yum. When yum takes forever to download it's headers I use apt. When I want to browse software I use synaptic and apt. When the rpm is not in a repository I use rpm itself. And when the red up2date icon bothers me enough I use up2date. It's all rpm based, so I use it all.
Of course, the downside to so many tools is the problem of choosing one.

Personally, I like the ability to "cruise" through available packages with Synaptic - add a couple, update a couple, remove a couple...

Glad Synaptic was mentioned. Forgive me for digressing some, but I've never taken a shine to Synaptic. And I consider myself a GUI man. Hell, any GUI, as far as I'm concerned, is easier. Thus the reason I use Up2date for updating the base. But I'll use the CLI for Apt-get rather that use the GUI . For searching and installing, Yum in the CLI is what I use. One of the days, I'll search for a tutorial for Synaptic. To get back to the thread, Up2date is my main choice for keeping up to date on my Fedora. Isn't choice a great thing?

I use apt-get an yum from the cli and if I am feeling lazy I use the frontends cobind (for yum) and Synaptic (for apt-get)

Oh, I've had problems - but it was solely with RH9 and the buggy RPM version. I got real good at rebuilding the RPM database... :(

Here, here! I wish it was graphical. Even something like Fink for X11/Mac OS X would be awesome.

is that what happened...I did a complete reinstall the other night (new harddrive as well) and when I reloaded Synaptic it was different...the box on lower right was missing....sheesh..I thought somehow I had done it...:p

yum for me, simply because that's what came with the distro. I actually prefer yum to synaptic, which I have used with the ccrma repo. I don't think yum needs a GUI although it probably could make better use of the CLI than it currently does, particularly where searching for files is concerned.

I use both, depending on which one I can get to work.
I like to use RPM when I can, to add A program or tool that I didn't have before.

I just installed Fedora Core 2 in my son's computer and had problems with yum. I downloaded apt and Synaptic, then went to FedoraTracker.org and had it auto-generate an apt repository list for me to put into /etc/apt/sources.list. (I removed freshrpms). Synaptic is the way to go , and people need to know about FedoraTracker!

Fresh rpm's does kinda suck, I am curious to know if anyone knows if there are repositories suitable for test releases. The last time I used yum (from the CLI) it took 3 hours, I have DSL and can do 3 gigs in about two hours and I know that the update wasn't that huge. Yum just hung, and hung, and ground to a halt, and hung some more. I'm so tired of this crap, its even worse with fc2. Apt needs to hurry and improve its dependency handling so I can uninstall this piece of garbage yun.

I've never had problems with RPMS from freshrpm, so your experience is quite different from mine.

It has something to do with some repositories that have slower speed hence the reason why Yum took a lot of time to download. Try to look at the mirror repositories close to your location.

I use APT, normaly in combination with Synaptic - it's especially usefull when I search for a package of which I don't know the name. For me, it was very easy to decide this because YUM is very slow on my system (compared to APT at least), I never understood how Up2date works (why should I use a special tool to update when I can have that with APT or YUM as well? Why does this tool use it's own repositories instead of the ones that APT or YUM is using, so proper updating is guaranteed?) and APT always simply worked very good for me.
In general, I only use software that is available through APT (NewRPMs, FreshRPMs, DAG, ATRPMS) because I would forget to update other packages anyway - the only (at least of the important packages) package on my system I compiled from sources is the kernel.

Last night, just for jollies, I had loaded up a fresh install of FC2, and didn't have the apt rpm for fc2, not its companion, synaptic, loaded. Yum comes with the FC2 distibution, so I started yum. While it was running, I switched to a different screen, installed apt-0.5.15cnc6-0.fdr.11.2.i386.rpm , and then instlled synaptic-0.48.2-2.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm . When I went back to the yum screen, it still hadn't finished finding and updating the lists. I stopped it, and started apt-get to establish the repository list. Then I ran synaptic, and in just over an hour, it had finished. Yum sucks! The couple of times I've used it, it slogs along like molassas in January.
Like the couple of folks above, with the synaptic front-end, if you want to install something, just find it and install it. Go to http://www.fedora.us/wiki/FedoraHOWTO for a really good description of how to set up apt-get with synaptic.
As for Up2Date, I stopped using that when I could no longer use it via RedHat. That's when I found the link to fedora.us . I haven't looked back.

Does anyone know of any apt repositories that are safe to you use with testing releases of Fedora? I can't take this yum crap any more.
