Sony Handycam on firewire

I recently updated my HP laptop (6209us) x64 to Fedora 9 ( yes x64) and I have been trying to connect my Sony handycam DCR-HC28 via firewire so that I may be able to edit the video and such that is located on the camera. I have installed UCView and it does not seem to be able to detect the camera, actually I am not sure the computer is detecting the camera at all. If anyone could please give me a hand I would be rather grateful. :) thnx
