Like first I want to apologize if I open this topic, and someone has write about this before.I'm new into all this about linux and I need a big help. And second thing I'm a noob who want to live Windows and Bill Ga(y)tes behind and enter in world of Linux.I have download Fedora 9 x86_64 dvd iso and I burn it on DVD.Next week I'm buyin a new computer :

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H (with integrated ATI Radeon HD3200 graphic card) board
Amd Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4600+ 2.4Ghz processor
2GB DDR2 Apacer 800Mhz
SATA2 160GB 8MB Seagate Maxtor® DiamondMax™ 21

Maybe a lot of you will say if I'm noob then why I not try other OS like Ubuntu.I saw a F8 at my friend and I "fall in love" in Fedora in first sight.I saw how stable it is and how it's workin and beside all that a very nice interface. And I have read on forums a lot of Fedora so I get some knowledge about it.But I never find about resizeing the HDD.How much space I need for ROOT partition HOME partition SWAP partition and do I need some partitions too like BOOT etc.So give me some sugestions how to resize a HDD of 160 GB,and only Fedora will be installed on it without Windows. So how much space I need for ROOT(I was thinking about 40GB),how much for SWAP(I guess 2GB because I have 2GB of DDR2 memory)and the most of space I will use it for HOME(storing the music, movies etc.)

Any advice will be helpful,Thanks

Welcome Muzicar,

You're going to get different answers but here's mine:

/ = 15 gigs
/boot = 200 meg
/home = 30 gigs
/swap = twice the amount of ram

Hi Muzicar

I always liked having a separate /home partition, but, in my opinion, you don't want to do that with Fedora because it changes too often. The same applies to /var (and a lot of the others) - just do backups. I think a 2GB swap, ~100MB /boot and all available space for /, should be fine.

You'll probably get lots of different opinions on this one, though...

Edit: I wouldn't want my F7 /home partition to "confuse" my F9 /home partition.

Welcome Muzicar,

You're going to get different answers but here's mine:

/ = 15 gigs
/boot = 200 meg
/home = 30 gigs
/swap = twice the amount of ram
This is pretty close to mine. I had a separate partition for /boot and /swap, before, too. However, I figure it'd be just as easy to have them in / since they won't be storing any information that needs saving.

Anyway, before I used:
/ = 16GB
/boot = 256MB
/swap = 2GB
/home = what's left

Currently I use:
/ = 18GB
/home = what's left

and I would definitely keep /home on a separate partition, unless you plan on having another partition just for file storage and moving all of your details and preferences over and back per installation (which kinda can be a pain, but ehh).

Also, welcome to the Fedora community :)
