After what seemed to be a successful preupgrade, a reboot and an upgrade process, the X server won't start after booting. Also, login is not possible, that is, I can log in, but I do not get a shell (not as a regular user and not as root). I tried to boot in rescue mode and altered the xorg.conf file to not use 'nv' (nVidia GF6150) but to use 'vesa'. Later I tried 'vga' and also to rename the xorg.conf file. Nothing seems to have effect on what happens after booting. Starting the kernel in INIT 3 also did not seem to have an effect. CTRL+ALT+F2-F6 works ok.

Is X my problem or do I need to make explicit that I want to use bash somewhere?

upgrading between major rel is not recommended... hope that someone pop up with a workaround, unfortunately the only thing I can think to is formatting and installing a fresh FC9 from scratch...

I reran the fedora upgrade option from grub. After this I could login in a terminal (after I pressed ctrl-c, I got a prompt) The system was very slow. Via top I found out that gnome-config was taking up all cpu / mem / vmem. I killed it and before i could rerun a pstree | grep gnome, x started out of the blue and presented me a login screen (it took the system some minutes to build up the screen). I can log in and then the system hangs. The problem now is to find out which process is causing the system to hang.

why, LDC ?
because they were the reason behind my FC9 not booting as well :)
for my knowledge, only Debian installer put ipv6 on tunneling, so it install and boot correctly even on non-ip6 enabled MUX.
