I've just gotten KDE 3.2 up and running, and boy is it sweet. But I've just noticed a rather good tutorial, on FedoraNews (http://www.fedoranews.org/), that I thought deserved to go here. So here it is:

A Quick Introduction to KDE 3.2 Installation

KDE 3.2 is out. This is the buzzword today in the linux community. If you are someone who want to install KDE 3.2 today itself but don't have any clue about how to do it, this tutorial is for you. Maybe someone will write a detailed tutorial later. This is just a mini tutorial for users who are in a hurry to experience this latest release from KDE immediately.
Download all the files or the files you need from http://ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.2/RedHat/Fedora/i386/ and save them in /tmp/kde (for example).


Installing KDE for the first time
If you are installing KDE for the first time in your Fedora box, open a linux console and execute the following commands.

$ cd /tmp/kde
$ sudo rpm -ivh *
This will install KDE 3.2 in your system. Now you can select KDE from your login screen and login. KDE 3.2 splash screen will appear logging you into K Desktop Environment.

Upgrading an existing KDE installation
If you are upgrading from an existing KDE installation, please make sure that you login through GNOME or through a text terminal. This is needed for a proper installation of KDE.

$ cd /tmp/kde
$ sudo rpm -Uvh *
This will upgrade your system to KDE 3.2. Now you can select KDE while logging in.
If you are installing for the first time or if you are upgrading from an existing installation, please make sure that you have downloaded the necessary files and you have taken care of all the dependency issues.

I invite other staff members who are interested in KDE to write a detailed tutorial. If I could manage time to do it later, I will definitely write one.

I'm sure KDE3.2 is a great product ... it's just a pity that the result of installing it was that it trashed my Gnome menus (removed all the KDE menu items and created menu links to all screensavers). Sorry, guys, I'd prefer to choose my own desktop rather than have the opposition put their comptitors out of business (intentionally or otherwise). Adds obligatory :-) ... why *are* you people so sensitive?

I would suggest trying the new KDE and GNOME desktops by installing FC2 test1 out at the moment. They've been integrated a lot better into the desktop than an external install achieves.

I haven't experienced that problem, but then i've probably not noticed it since i never venture into Gnome.

I like KDE and I like Fedora. The issue I have is that fedora does not implement kde well -- at least for my machine. Out of the box, kde is buggy. 30% of the time I logged to kde in fedora, kde is not responsive. This improved when I upgraded to KDE3.2 using the fedora RPMs in KDE's sites. It improved a lot, kde is now actually usable. But still it is unstable, sometimes after a few hours of usage, kde becomes unresponsive. In contrast, my Gnome sessions are very stable. Does anyone experience the same problem?
Also, Arts and ESD plugins in XMMS does not work in my KDE session, only OSS. How do I fix this? If I use Arts, XMMS terminates; if I use ESD, I get an error message that sound does not work. I prefer ESD, can anyone help?

1. I'd suggest you try out the packages from http://kde-redhat.sf.net/

i got my 3.2 from kde.org ftp and it works fine so far on fedora core 1

Despite my initial irritation, I have to agree that KDE 3.2 is a wonder to behold. Somehow I have an idea that I may not miss Gnome that much. This does't mean that I think KDE is "better" (in the sense of "What's the best programming language?" - Aswer "What do you want to do with it?"), just more comfortable for me to use. I was slightly alarmed to hear someone talking about the need for GNU/Linux desktop convergence - seems to me that diversity with interoperability is a powerful advantage. It would be a shame if popularity as a desktop resulted in sameness.

If only there weren't so much of it. I'm spending way too much time admiring the goods on offer, rather than just deciding what I want today. Thnks everyone at KDE.

to be honest, i hardly develop appliation in KDE because of QT, and i also never use kvdevelop, currently i'm using visual slickedit for IDE and Intell CPP compiler. I have found borland c++ builderx as one of the best tools i can ask for so far in linux :p

to me desktop environment does not matter that much aside from personal preferences.

I checked the xmms website and it has new version of xmms and esd plugin. ESD now works, arts was replaced by ALSA. Alsa doesn't work on my machine, but since esd already works, no big deal.

Thanks to a handy patch from redhat's Than Ngo, arts-1.2.0 is now usable by gtk1 apps (including xmms). Details are at:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65664

kde-redhat's arts packages contain this patch.

Just a little notice to new users, if you aren't able to cleanly upgrade kde to 3.2. Don't upgrade. Stay with kde as it is and wait for core 2 to arrive.

Yes, you are going to need to update those packages. You can do it the easy way (through yum or apt-get (using development repos probably) or you can manually get and update them by searching at various RPM sites such as http://rpm.pbone.net/ GL

Pretty much everything that is in http://mirror.hiwaay.net/redhat/fedora/linux/core/development/i386/Fedora/RPMS/ there will be in FC2 so yes, it is.

How stable is FC2 running right now? I finally have FC1 up and its going pretty well. Only problems I'm having are getting DreamWeaverMX to work with wine (so I can stop using Windows) and after installing KDE3.2, I lost my sound.

you COULD put in --force --nodeps how ever things may not work as well with that many conflicts, I would update :)

Well, the short answer is not very. FC2 is still in beta (test) stage. And the first test still at this point as well. There are many little (and big!) problems that have been found and addressed for the upcoming release of test2 (29th Mar). http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/

If you want stability wait for FC2 final. If you want a preview of future releases, try out the tests. Or if you want to help in the "testing" itself by using and submitting bugs found to Bugzilla. After all, that's the purpose for RH releasing tests to the public: for it to be tested. :D I'd say stick with FC1 for now until FC2 if you don't want hassles. OTOH, you may have an inkling t preview the latest in FC....it's all your decision. :) I run both FC1 and FC2test1 if you wanted to know.

Hi all, ok not all is well...KDE 3.2 worked great after install...I shut down for the night...this morning I started the computer and once it gets to KDE splash...it crashes...the debug dialog indicates:
KDE session manager (ksmserver) has crashed...generated a "signal 11" (sigsegv)...no other information is logged...
I have done a search in forums and on web but no info specifically addresses my problem....
anyone have a solution...I am a newbie at this stuff so I am really lost at this point...
