I moved it to news, thx pegasus.

But will the mirror gets FC2 by tomorrow morning as scheduled?

jrblevin
13th May 2004, 09:08 PM
That sucks, but wait, it still says they are releasing it to the mirrors in the morning (May 14). Does that mean that the mirrors won't actually have it online until the 18th or just that the release isn't official until then?

ewdi
13th May 2004, 09:11 PM
sync to mirror will take time, so i dont think it will be complete by tomorrow, however ISO will not be available yet until 18th

Perhaps 4STACKS will be disabled on the final release for NVidia users.

hi,

now that most of the mirrors carry the FC2 final branch, I am wondering how to update from 1.92 (t3)? just put in the repositories to yum.conf and do yum update?

and what are all the different RPMS.* directories? there is a *.os, a *.stable etc. - what is what?

Thanks,
Sascha

harlekin
14th May 2004, 10:11 AM
the different RPMS.xxx directories r for the different types for repos

there might be a bunch of users that dont want 2 download the testing or unstable packages and only want 2 use os and stable
thats why they put the packages in different directories so u can edit ur yum.conf (or source.list for apt / synAPTic) just 2 fit ur preferences

u can upgrade to core2 via yum/apt but thats not recommend (means there will not be automatic downgrade of packages and the update routine from t3 to core 2 is not well tested...)
better download the iso and start a new installation (see also the howto thread for the upgrade from t3 to core2)

espique
14th May 2004, 10:29 AM
ok thanks. what's the difference between RPMS.os and RPMS.stable?

sascha

mirrors have it!!
Don't know whish mirrors you use, but:
Except one of the shown fedora.redhat.com mirrors NONE has the "core/2/" dirs. And if so (changes this day), the permission is denied(550).

Also i've seen several upgrade posts in this forum according systems that have already been changed FC2T3 -> FC2 release.
Installing "fedora-release-2-4" using up2date, yum etc. is not a signal that you have a final version now.

espique
14th May 2004, 12:06 PM
well, the major european (german) mirror site DO have it. since FC2 has been frozen a couple of days ago and since the mirrors were only updated yesterday, I must assume this is final code. example:

ftp://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora/fedora/2/i386/

world readable. enjoy.

As written on the pages, the freeze day is friday, 14th of may. You can expect that the i386 RPM-Dirs carrie the final core2 (tu-chemnitz)

I guess the next days they'll be busy with the installer, packing the isos and setting up the iso mirrors and torrent servers.

// STi
PS: cant you wait until its for sure the final, and the fedora guys release it open to the mirrors, and annaunce the release on the page?

espique
14th May 2004, 12:39 PM
sure I can wait. but that's not the point...

I really hope they fix the 4k_stacks config problem...ive been waiting to be able to update my nvidia drivers so i can play some of my games...neeeed games....

im so impatient...

3 days....

micha

Is 4K_stacks the problem or the nVidia drivers ? The 4k stacks bring some improvements, so I guess nVidia is gonna have to adapt to that.

s0lus
15th May 2004, 11:55 PM
o definently...what i should have posted was that i cant wait for FC2 to come out so that Nvidia will actually put out a working driver for it...they dont care for drivers used with 'Tests'... I will have to just wait...

I spent a long time trying to get the driver to work with no luck... Did everything by the book, but when it came to editing the XFconfig or the Xorg.conf file...i was confused which one was used...

finally found it was the xorg.conf and when i changed that with the proper settings my comp would boot up, yet when X was about to start, totally lock up and then after awhile reboot...:(

Yes, as a Bittorrent (CD and DVD). The MD5SUMS are cryptographically signed and match the files (see this message (http://livna.org/~anvil/fc2-torrents.txt) ), confirming they are authentic.

Yes, this is the official release of Fedora Core2 final. The files were released to the mirrors two days ago; why are you surprised?

The mirrors are FTP (file transfer protocol) and HTTP (web browser) file repositories. These depend on a specific set of servers for the distribution of the files.

Bittorrent is a protocol that allows many people to share the bandwidth load (see the official Bittorrent web site (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/introduction.html) ). No official servers are (necessarily) used for the distribution.

Since anyone can start a Bittorrent, special precautions have to be taken to insure that the files have not been tampered with. The Fedora Core team has taken these precautions; they include an MD5SUM file which lists the md5sum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum) for each file, and have gpg signed (http://www.gnupg.org/) the file. By doing this, the authenticity of the MD5SUM file can be verified, and the MD5SUM file contents lets you insure that the files have not been tampered with.

Anyone else had luck with the bittorrent file? I got about 62% of the 4-cd set, and then it just died. I've uploaded about 600mb this afternoon, yet haven't downloaded 1k more than what I had this morning. It says it can't connect to the connection tracker, so does that mean this torrent is totally dead?

s0lus
18th May 2004, 02:33 AM
I got to 62% also...i think that is what it was...i think all of the sources dropped out...im waiting till after 12 tonight to see if it comes up on the servers...i really hope so...ive been looking forward to this for awhile...

The torrent is winding down now, since the official mirrors are about to open. There is also a regular Fedora torrent available at:

http://torrent.dulug.duke.edu/

That will probably be updated when the official mirrors open.
