OK, from what I understand sound should work right outa the box on this laptop with FC2 but I get nada :-/ The intel i8xx driver and the ac97 driver appear to be loaded when I do an lsmod (along with a lot of other snd_* stuff), but when I do anything audio related, play a CD, cat /dev/random > /dev/audio *g* I get blessed silence. The hardware works, thinking I was crazy I booted into XP and am posting this while making all sorts of noises!!! Any suggestions? Thanks

I had to run the soundcard detection utility, listen to the test sounds, and after that everything was OK. Prior to that, I had no sound whatsoever, even though my sound card was detected (SB Live).

This might sound stupid, but did you check your mixer settings? Try running a program like AlsaMixer (alsamixer from the command line) and make sure that your volumes aren't muted. I had this problem before and it was partly because the volumes were muted.

I have a D600 as well, and for some reason every time I boot all of my sound outputs are muted again. I suspect that the error I keep seeing in /var/log/messages is related:
modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
But I haven't been able to track it down yet.
So, I agree with Viro: make sure your PCM isn't muted.

Are you using KDE? Check the kmix settings, and use the "advanced" controls. I found that the "IEC958" switch (whatever that is) when on, would kill all sound on the laptop. I switched that off, and sound came back. These advanced setting I believe are new for KDE 3.2.x so they didn't exist in FC1.
I did that and all sound seems to work for me now, except the beta player for Real Player. Which seems to work off and on, need to track down what is stopping this from working all the time.
