I recently got comcast as my ISP, and was able to connect
to the internet without any problems (all I had to do was plug
the ethernet cable into the computer and reboot the computer
and I was on my way, on all 3 distros). I have 2 computers, 1 at
home (pent III, 40 gig hd, 375.7 mb ram, FC6, FC8 and Ubuntu 7)
the other at work (amd, 1 gig ram, 80 gig hd, FC8).

I took my work computer home to get online (way faster processor and use it
only for a few days) but could not get online. I tried using
system-config-network to manually set things like IP address,
DNS addresses, search domain etc. copied over from
my home computer.

I can get a connection sometimes but I can't get web pages.

I know from older days around here Comcast authenacated by MAC address of the connected nic. It may still do this but not sure these days.

Comcast only allows 1 CPE connection and they do MAC binding..

The only way to hook up another piece of equipment is to remove all cables from the Comcast cable modem (should be power, ethernet, and coaxial cable).. wait for 2 minutes.. hook the coax and power cables back to the modem.. wait for it to come online.. now hook your new device up..

If you plan on using more than one device at a time or think you will be switching devices often, the best bet is to get a router.. this way you can have multiple devices connected and connect/remove devices as you need while Comcast only sees one device connected

Thank you Matt and Brian for your quick replies.
I did as you instructed. Afterwards I had to click on
"Automatically obtain IP address settings with: dhcp"
in system-config-network.
My problem is now solved
