Hi,
the new Fedora Core 3 schedule is out now. It can be seen here : http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/ So FC3T1 should be released in 6 days (12th July) and the final FC3 release is to come on the 18th October. Let wait and see how many changes there will be ;)

Test 1 in 6 days? I don't even know what new features to expect from Core 3, let alone a first test release.

Fedora Core 3 plan/schedule posted

Well, it's long overdue, but here's something.

Posted at http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/
is a preliminary draft of a schedule for Fedora Core 3, reproduced
below. (Please ignore the GNOME 2.6 typo in the online version;
that will be corrected.)

Obviously, a schedule doesn't say much about what's in it.
Here at Red Hat we're working on various things for Fedora Core 3:

- GCC 3.4 - those that have looked at rawhide will have noticed this
- GNOME 2.8
- KDE 3.3
- SELinux, yet again. This includes a new 'targeted' policy that
monitors specifc daemons with less intrusion than the strict
policy in use before.
https://listman.redhat.com/archives/fedora-selinux-list/2004-May/msg00096.html
- IIIMF - continued evolution of the new input framework
- Indic language support
- Various desktop-related features, including, but not limited to:
- Pango support for Mozilla
- Remote desktops using VNC
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-desktop-list/2004-June/msg00007.html
- Printing improvements
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2004-June/msg00370.html
- Evolution 2.0

And, random other stuff, of course.

I'm sure there's other stuff people would like to see. What sorts
of things?

Bill

Although after the FC1->FC2 Leap, this upgrade seems much more diluted (which could be considered a good thing in some sense).

I ope IPv6 is disable by default, and gosh, selinux is making my hear grey

For some reason I am not getting as excited about this as I was about FC2. I guess with the major jump from the 2.4->2.6 kernel and Xfree->X.org gave FC2 a lot of "new stuff" whereas FC3 won't quite have as much but will still be an important step on the road ahead. I think I may sit this one out unless I buiild a new PC around the release time.

Hmmm....*eyes up unused P3 box in the corner*.....hmmm...maybe not ;)

I'm getting dizzy keeping up. What version of FC do I write a howtos for then?

For the kernel i think of 2.6.7 ... on the mirrors, in the developpment directory you could see a rpm for it :-)

I'm getting dizzy keeping up. What version of FC do I write a howtos for then? Well they're all essentially the same.

But Evolution 2 - now there's something to get excited about. Although it would also be nice for them to expand their bluecurve icon set as well.

This is always the problem. You can finally relax when you have it all set, then you go and mess it up with a test release ;-)

Ug

Yea - but don't forget test releases are not recommended for Newbies in any way shape or form.

Let me just make this clear: Test releases are for testers and developers only. If you install a test release, do a clean insteall, not an upgrade. When a new test release or the full core release is out there, reinstall again. Upgrades are only supposed to work from one stable core release to another stable core release. Installing a test release means you agree to reinstalling. If you do install a test release, please report any issues you find, that's why we have test releases after all, too get the bugs out before release.

I don't see how they can get gnome 2.8 before Core 3, gnome 2.7.2 was just released, and 2.7.3 is will be out this week. Mayve GUADEC will give gnome development a boost, but I just don't see gnome 2.8 beeing done by the time Core 3 is supposed to be released.

Evolution 2.0 is something to look forward too indeed. Integration with gnome and gaim, the connector included and more gnome HIG love. I've heard that the evolution calender will work with the gnome clock applet and highlight days where you have something to do, clicking a date in the clock applet is supposed to show any tasks you have scheduled that day, great.

Another thing I look forward to is to see if they finally will give us Fedora-Extras. It's needed, and needed badly.

The terminal services project looks promising too.

depending on whether I feel up to grabbing a DVD iso off the net I will probably have a play with the test releases on my P3 paperweight as I mentioned in an earlier post. Actually the more I think about it the more excited I am getting about this release...oooh new version....newer toys....I will probably keep my laptop on RH9 (it is where all my thesis work for uni is) I will also keep my main desktop rig as FC2 until FC4 comes out unless I do a major upgrade of it before then and need to reinstall. But I like to tinker and play so I will probably be unable to stop myself from shelling out for a KVM switch and getting that test rig all sorted out for some FC3test loving.

Got the same problem. I think they are moving to fast. They should at least way't a year ore so before comming out with a new version. Wait for some more improvements and new stuff. Otherwise it's gonna be a big task for keeping up with alle the new releases.
I've got the same problem Ghenry. I also own a site and write howto's. The howto's do not really specify FC but I test them on them. And if Fedora keeps on ketting new releases there will be to much distro (versions) to cover.
If they keep this up, I'm gonna be forced to switch back to suse.

The whole point of Fedora is a fast moving cutting edge linux distro with versions released 2-3 times a year. I believe they will support each version until the release of the 2nd one after its release (e.g FC2 will be supported until FC4 arrives). After that you can either upgrade to the latest release or explore other options for keeping updated software. If you want a slower moving distro with longer support cycles etc then look at RedHat's commercial offerings or *gasp* even another distro. As for me, I like the rapid developement cycle and the chance to play with new things so I will keep following Fedora.

The Fedora Legacy Project (http://fedoralegacy.org/) provides support for out of date Red Hat and Fedora products don't forget.

But as Varkk says, the point of Fedora was to be on the cutting edge with a continuous development cycle.
