View Full Version : Grub refuses to install on separate WinMe HDD

I suspect this is a configuration problem, since I could not resist trying the following on my newly home- assembled AMD 3000 64 bit system with two SATA HDD:s:
1. hda - WinMe (FAT32)
2. hdb - Fedora 64 bit (NTFS)
Both boot up OK separately ( I came to like Fedora, dual-booting with WinXP on another machine, hoping to "dump" Win eventually), but Grub does not boot up "other" (the WinMe drive, which boots up OK if I disconnect the hdb drive).
Any suggestions?
Cheers

How did you installed grub? And where ? /dev/hda or /dev/hda1 or in the MBR?

Thank you Ilja. Will check asap. Being "new" to Fedora, I just followed the installation Wizard (too scared to lose my WinMe, which an earlier Fedora installation made inaccessible).

If you installed FC2 on the second drive, then that's probably where GRUB went, but unless you have that second drive turned on in the bios, you won't be able to use it to boot to the OS of your choice. So, just hop in the bios and check on that second drive. The first time I installed Linux on a second drive this solved my problem.

Posting your /boot/grub/grub.conf file may be helpful (only readable by root).

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.
I have now found some further clues; it would seem that the problem lies in kernel 2.6, according to an article at:
http://lwn.net/Articles/86835/
It does not seem to affect all machines, and I did not have the problem on an AMD 2600 system, dual-booting with WinXP.
The solution suggested in the above article is a bit complicated for me at this stage, so I'll just change the boot-up setting in the BIOS if/when I need Win. Hopefully some energetic programmer will make the necessary changes in a kernel update.
Cheers
