Specs below. Custom built.
It's funny, there is a computer I would say I have had for 8 years yet there is nothing in it that is that original computer.
1 x 80GB HD
2 x 250GB HD

I built my desktop, started with a shell and it's evolving by the payday Ž_Ž
I've got a Samsung lappy, (snazzy specs, incredible heat) and a Legend (now lenovo) Pc that's about 7 years old.
Mind you now I think of it, I've got a Toshiba 3100 sitting in my bedroom. Love that 10mb HDD and the 740kb RAM.

I built my own PC. I like having control over what goes in it. You just don't get that with off-the-shelf PCs. I know there are places that can build one for you the way you want, but I'd rather build it myself instead of having someone else build it. That way if something goes wrong I have no one but myself to blame. :)

besides, it's just way too fun. I wish I could build a new one a week. Hard enough to get permission from the wife to build one every few years...

All systems in my house were built by me with the exception of one bought as a loss leader from Fry's. At the time we needed a copy of XP and it was almost like getting a computer for free with its purchase!

yeah, probably like about most everyone else here i thought about what a neat business that would be to get into. See, I am also a welder and metal and aluminum worker. I could make custom cases and build computers in them. Install Linux on them...But then I look around me at the average joe blow and start thinking about the liability issues. the constant phone calls, "my computer is doing this..." the hassles. People screwing up your computers then blaming you because you built it...I guess I will just stay satisfied with building for family and friends and keep it at that...

Reading this it makes me feel 'guilty' because I wasted three chances to load Linux in some computers I built for two friends. Instead I loaded Windows :(
Anyway this happened two years ago (before I became completely redeemed).

I've got a network of old hardware that I've put together using stuff from ebay.
I have a dual PIII based around an Intel GX440 server board running SATA RAID5 (and that was hard to get running), and two Asus CUV4X-E boards with PIII chips that stream video off the server to my two TVs. One of those is still Windows, the other that is hooked up to my plasma tv I'm currently building up with Fedora Core 6.
I was going to run mythtv but I'm now thinking of just using nfs, since the screen resolution on a 50" HD plasma is good enough to see what you are doing through gnome anyway (I'm actually on the plasma with my cordless keyboard and stting 3 meters away in my recliner right now typing this in!) I might get bored one day and write some php to create a gui.
Finally I do have some stuff that I bought new - an Asus board (can't remember the model) with an AMD64 3800 (2200mhz from memory), 1GB RAM, 2x250GB striped IDE, 1x73GB Ultra 160. No that isn't running linux (until I can work out how to get into my work Nortal VPN network using Linux I have to use Windows so I can earn some dollars)
Basically I don't bother with stuff already built.

I said I built my own computers but that is not exactly accurate. I get computers and parts from yard sales, city clean up days, and when I build some one a new computer Ill nock off $30 if I get there old one. I rarely buy hardware at retail and never off the shelf software, except for Windows for my customers.
OK I admit I am the poor mans computer tech. :p
Even the systems I build to sell are pieced together from old computers. I sell them as used rebuilt with no warranty.
Now dont think I am doing this just because I am cheep. That is only half of it. I am a broke collage student with a wife and 2 kids. Need all the money I can get for dippers.

The computer I'm responding from
Specs:
Mainboard: check

I can provide the specs for the other computers, but they're eerily similar.

I usually scavenge my computers "what you're throwing that away??? Noooo, there's an ATI Rage Pro in there!"
For the first time in years, I could afford to build a new PC from scratch, wahay for not being a student anymore.

Six machines here.
Two home built machines based on GigaByte MBs with AMD64 CPUs (2800+ and 3500+) - my main workstation and home theatre PC.
Two Compaq Evo D510 SFF boxes for gateway/IPS and utility server (second hand).
HP/Compaq Evo D530 SFF for other workstationy-type thingy stuff (second hand).
Compaq Armada M700 notebook ..... six years old and still going, with replaced battery (once), optical drive (twice), memory (twice) and HDD (once). But still going. The damn thing just won't die. :)

Old post... but it's nice that somebody dug it up. I'm overwhelmed by the percentage of custom builds. Custom build for me, but at the moment I'm not using Fedora or Fedora Core on it. Just installed Slackware 12 about 6 hours ago and it has been great so far. :) Dell built my laptop. Building a laptop is a bit beyond my ken. ;)

I've been building my own systems since circa 1998 ( that's almost 10 years now!). I've bought a couple OEM prebuilt machines over these years (laptops and one desktop), but at least the desktop was not for my personal use.

On both PC's I run Windows XP and Fedora in a dual boot config. I do dual boot since Red Hat 9.
