Hello,
I have had some trouble getting the firewire ports working in my laptop (Asus L3800C). But in my newly achieved experience it's actually quite simple. Firewire has been enabled since kernel 2.6.6-1.427 but the only last thing you have to do, is to add this line to /etc/modprobe.conf: alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394
Why this isn't done while installing the kernel rpm, beats me...
Now when i plug in my firewire harddrive it automatically gets registered in /dev as a scsi device and i can mount it as usual.
