Is anyone else worried about Fedora9?

I've been trying the preview (which I guess is like a beta, pre-RC) and for a start NetworkManager seems completely broken - it randomly ignores the DNS or gateway information, doesn't even start on boot, and when you disable it and go back to ifcg-eth0 scripts, that doesn't seem to activate on boot either and you have to issue an '/etc/init.d/network restart'.

I did use VMWare Server 1.0.5 for the testing, but that's a fair test environment (I didn't install the Tools - they wouldn't build anyway).

I usually skip the even number releases, so am due to migrate from F7 to F9, but looking at this I might wait until F10!

I knew moving to NetworkManager would be bad - making Fedora way too Ubuntu-like, and really its only for wireless or DHCP users - for static ethernet users its a bit pointless (especially as there's no PPTP VPN plugin).

Speaking of pointless defaults, I see LVM is still the default partitioning scheme - even if you only have one hard disk.

Nice to see LUKS disk encryption though - although I would have like to be able to chose which partitions to encrypt in Anaconda - maybe /home and swap, not everything but /boot.

Well, to be honest, we get these kind of doom-and-gloom threads prior to each release. But, I've got confidence. And if needed, they can always slip the release date.

The critical part of this is to remember that fedora is out here on the cutting (bleeding) edge. Therefore, sometimes it gets a bit dicey.

I disagree, your running in a 'sandbox', it's an artificial environment.

Sorry you couldn't install vmware tools that might have helped somewhat.

Don't base your opinion of the final F9 based on the preview - Remember, any blocker problems you found in F9 Alpha/Preview are guaranteed to be fixed in F9, since that's the point of the preview release!

Hi,

I've been trying the preview (which I guess is like a beta, pre-RC) and for a start NetworkManager seems completely broken - it randomly ignores the DNS or gateway information, doesn't even start on boot, and when you disable it and go back to ifcg-eth0 scripts, that doesn't seem to activate on boot either and you have to issue an '/etc/init.d/network restart'.
I disabled the NetworkManager. After that the DNS/gateway information was no longer "forgotten". And at some point - after a few update cycles - I enabled the NetworkManager again. So far, no more "Alzheimer" problems here. I just have to issue a
'/sbin/ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 autoneg on duplex full'
and restart the network daemon, because the switch is not capable of dealing with Gigabit ethernet.

Nice to see LUKS disk encryption though - although I would have like to be able to chose which partitions to encrypt in Anaconda - maybe /home and swap, not everything but /boot.
When I installed the F9 beta, I could choose, which partitions to encrypt. And you would also want to encrypt /var and /tmp. ;)

Cheers

About NetworkManager. Good think youīve skipped Fedora 8 because it was the first Fedora with NM as default in both KDE and GNOME!!! Iīve spend about 5 days debugging my pppoe internet connection In Fedora 8 because of the damn Network Manager who doesnīt know (and probably will never know) anything apart from a few wireless and dhcp.

Iīm writing this from Fedora 9 Preview KDE 4 desktop and I donīt find it too much user appealing. Behind the superb user interface there are hundreds of bugs!!! I think that most of those bugs will be solved after the release date for Fedora 9. Right now Iīm fighting an insane bug, I have to tap twice the ī key to get it once. The keyboard acts pretty bad, through it was ok in previous Fedora. Another bug is that there is no reference whatsoever about starting a terminal in super user mode and itīs driving me nuts! I canīt get access to the filesystem beacuse of that.

Maybe we will get lucky and the Fedora 9 Gold will be bug free. Or not!

Dragos, for me F9 worked out of the box ( x64 version ).
NM was enhanced, the annoying pam-keyring screen is gone for good and it connects to my wireless network at login. Never had any issues with the keyboard, neither in vi nor in OpenOffice and KWrite. I am also using Krusader as my file manager, since it's the closer thing to Total Commander (btw, you can start it as super-user too). It's also available in f9 repos.
Use su - to login as root in the konsole.
Change KDE interface to the KDE 3.0. Detailed explanations are available on KDE official site.
