Hi Gurus,

Here is my issue ,

I set my yum repo to point to Fedora-Release-9 and did an upgrade.
(I did it from FC7 to FC8 and it worked like a charm)
Now, KDE4 starts but when desktop is loaded X session is killed and redirects me to the login form.

Please help me to investigate the issue. I think it is not big issue ... may be a service to disable..

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply but could you please be more precise.
Do I need to point to the right compiz-fusion repo and yum update?
Do I need to move to another release instead of fedora-release-9, preview?
Do I need to deinstall glx ??

Thanks for your quick reply.

I was just moving your post to the correct section !

Do I need to deinstall glx

You will have to if you are using a ATI card or Nvidia card with proprietary drivers ( these drivers are unsupported in F9 )

Do I need to move to another release instead of fedora-release-9, preview?

You would have a easier time using F8 !

Do I need to point to the right compiz-fusion repo and yum update?

The compiz-fusion repo will automatically do this for you ! ( it supports F8 , F8.93 & F9 )

Hi,

I am running FC8 since its release...
And wanted to try KDE4...

OK Here is what i get from .xsession-errors

KDE 4 Fatal IO error: client killed No protocol specified drkonqi: cannot connect to X server :0.0
Error: Can't contact kdeinit4!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
No protocol specified
xprop: unable to open display ':0'

quite strange as I am running it as root.

Any clue or way to search???

Have you tried doing an "init 3" (it should go to console mode) then logging into console and then typing "startx" to see if the window manager starts? that could help to diagnose where the issue might be.

Regards.

Hi,

When I try to run Xorg -configure I got lots of errors
such as :
(EE) failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nsc_drv.xl
(EE) module ABI major version (1) doesn't match server's version(4)
...

And as soon As I try glxgears it redirects to gdm login screen...

What video hw/driver are you using?

that said, you could try
yum groupinstall kde-desktop
to make sure you have all the correct bits in place.

You were right... the upgrade process did not install kdebase and kdebase-libs...
Now I am a bit further but still have some error kded4: Fatal IO error: client killed
kdeinit: Fatal IO error: client killed
klauncher: Exiting on signal 15
kwin: Fatal IO error: client killed
kded: Fatal IO error: client killed
ksmserver: Fatal IO error: client killed
KWrited - Listening on Device /dev/pts/0
Any clues?

try 'yum groupinstall kde-desktop' yet? :)

otherwise, how are you trying to start your session? via gdm? kdm? other?
