My first encounter with Linux was back in 1999 (or 2000) when I bought SuSE 6.3.
Setting up with xfree86 was a real pain. Things have improved, but why, after all this time is X-org still so fragile? When it blows, it really does blow out ungracefully.

Count your lucky stars because you still get to fall back to text mode.
When Windows Explorer goes belly up there's not much you can do.

Did you know that Windows (at least the 98 variety) is not hardwired to run .exe files but does it through the registry? That means a sneaky virus can (almost) completely subvert any computer running Windows and an anti-virus program can completely crash Windows.
Fun, eh?

Did you know that Windows (at least the 98 variety)Er, yes of course I know. As soon as I had the chance I jumped to NT4 where I could disable NETBIOS and apply (and audit) security to the vulnerable REGKEYS. Unfortunately being from microsoft meant their were so many ways to subvert the security I spent most of my time patching or going through wipe/restore cycles.
1997-2003 a time I'd like to forget.
