It seems that livna doesn't play well with Fedora 9 Preview. Problem might be avoided by using disablerepo and enablerepo options:
yum --disablerepo=livna --enablerepo=livna-development install foo-baar

On my F9 beta, the livna.repo and livna-devel.repo files define the same
baseurl's for [livna] and [livna-development] but both are
disabled anyway. Maybe yum doesn't like looking at two different
repos that are really the same... it might confuse the database?
if you're alway going to use yum --disablerepo=livna --enablerepo=livna-development ,
it would be simpler to just edit the enabled flag in the files to be 0 for the livna
and 1 for livna-development

Livna doesn't provide a livna-release package for rawhide or prereleases, so a workaround is as you mentioned enabling the livna-devel repo or editing /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo and setting enabled to 0 and editing /etc/yum.repos.d/livna-devel.repo and setting enabled to 1.

A side question
is it a good idea to go for livna or to use RPMforge (I can't find livna's name in rpmforge)

I think you're thinking of rpmfusion, the merger of livna, freshrpms , rpmforge and dribble... It would be best to use rpmfusion when it is available, but until then you should probably stick to livna or rpmforge but not both as certain packages are currently incompatable (this is part of the reason the rpmfusion initiative started).

New to Fedora 9 pre. Could not find basic instructions for adding livna.repo. How please?
Also is the Nvidia new driver stabilized yet for the .25 kernel?

The new driver works great with the 2.6.25 kernel , but it doesn't work with the F9 xorg server :(
