Hi - I have a home network - one PC running FC2 and two XP PCs. I was running FC1 and recently upgrdaed to FC2. My home network was working just great under FC1, but now with FC2, I cannot access my home network. When I click on Network==>My Network==>Homenetwork==>XP1PC, I get the following message:

"The filename "XP1PC" indicates that this file is of type "(null)". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "Samba share". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.

Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "Samba share", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file."

I have spent hours trying to fix it, reconfiguring Samba but without any sccess. Your suggestions would be greatly apprecaited. Is there another netwrork pacakge that I can use to access my home network?

Much appreciated.

I am not sure how much help this will be, but what are you using as a firewall/server? Is it the FC2 box? I have used clarkconnect before, but now use ipcop. It is smaller and has a smaller footprint. Clarkconnect 2.x series has a known problem with memory leaks as well. I have thought about installing FC2 as a server in place of ipcop, but not really sure how it would work. I also do not want to have to re-load ipcop if I can't get it to work right either. I do not know enough about linux or server yet to be able to diagnose the problems...

Sincerely,
Rob

If I'm reading this right, you are trying to connect to the XP boxes from the FC2 box...probably through nautilus or some other explorer...

I just loaded FC2 from scratch and can:

1) mount SMB shares from XP for full read/write access
2) mount Samba share and explore all my samba devices from XP using explorer
3) smbclient mount my XP to the FC2 box

All without issue...so I have full access.

If you can do the same, then I would suggest that maybe nautilus of the FC2 explorer that you are using might have some issues. I've heard of several issues with the Linux file exploreres when accessing SMB data.

test:

>\smbmount \\ip address of xp\share \mountpoint\ -o usermane=user,password=password

If that works and permissions are right, you should be able to access the data...
