Metisse - an 3D experimental X desktop with some OpenGL capacity. -> web site (http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/metisse/)

What I needed to install:

1) FVWM window manager - rpm found here -> for RedHat 7.x/8.x (http://fvwm-themes.sourceforge.net/rpm/)
fvwm depends on (rpms found here):
- fribidi-0.10.4-5.1.i386.rpm (http://fedora.mirrors.tds.net/pub/fedora-core/2/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/)
- libstroke-0.5.1-1.i386.rpm (http://ninja.no/apt/9/i386/RPMS.local/)

2) Downloaded:

- nucleo-0.1-20040701.tar.bz2 (http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/metisse/download_install.html)
compiled nucleo (./configure && make && make install(as root))

- metisse-0.3.0.tar.bz2 (http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/metisse/download_install.html)
compiled metisse (./configure && make && make install(as root))

That's all.

To run:

1) run: Xwnc -ac -geometry widthxheight :free_display_number
(example: Xwnc -ac -geometry 1024x768 :1 &)

2) run: metisse-start-fvwm

Amazing, ghaefb! Will FC3 already include a 3D Desktop? :)

ghaefb
4th July 2004, 01:34 AM
Did you try it fjleal ??
I don't know... I don't think it will be ready and stable for FC3.
I'd really like to have this Metisse on my Fluxbox :)

that was too easy :D
it's alright i guess

Did you try it fjleal ??
Definitely! And I was able to produce a screenshot - I'm uploading a small version of it, I hope you can see it well. I also added a 1400x1050 jpeg of that image to the gallery.

I am amazed!!!
This is really worth a try. :p

Don´t know if any of you ever heard of Project looking glass from Sun, but it really rocks....
Try the first developers version at https://lg3d.dev.java.net/
I hope you like it :)

Yes I watched their presentation movie months ago.. It looks great
It has even more cool features than metisse.

I'll try it if I have time, soon :)

My screenshot:

I made these shots... It's really cool, however it still has a long way to go till is completely usable. One thing is certain at this moment it runs far more apps than looking glass. Every app i tried (expect for chromium and Tux racer) worked and that's KDE and Gnome.

You tried Looking glass??
Can you post some screenshots here... plz

linuxmad
7th July 2004, 10:03 PM
I tried Looking glass but only in dev "size" that is on top of Gnome or Kde in a small window that really doesn´t do all that much. In may case and most FC2 users the full screen mode (lg3d-session) is not working because it can not read the "xorg.conf" file mainly because it is expecting a "XF86Config" file that doesn't exist anymore. I am trying to solve this, but with no luck so far. Help !!!!!!
Concerning the apps running on it, there are few that run flawlessly and that is not my experience at all, i am speaking from what i managed to read in the Project discussion forum.

Finally i was able to try it out. ... but not on Fedora. I was so desperate to see how it worked that i used one of my "test" disks with Suse 9.1, but with no luck, then i moved to Madrake 10 and guess what ... i was able to use Looking Glass in sesion mode (full mode).
I must say.... IT'S AMAZING!!!  ... I only hope this comes out fast... i cannot use this 2D thing anymore. Seriously.... Try it... It's worth it.
I tried a couple of apps from the xterminal and most of those running under QT didn't work, as for those using GTK i had diferent results:
Mozilla --works (badly)
Epiphany---works(almost)
Gimp---works(still some of the widgets aren't drawn correctly)
Chromium-works(...there are things out of the window... the mouse doesn't control the ship ,....but sound works :) )
Openoffice -- works (badly)
...and that's all. As i said "metisse" runs far more apps than LG, still when you try both you get the feeling that with LG you are in another dimension of computing.
Windows.... here we go!!!!! :D

ghaefb
8th July 2004, 10:48 AM
I really psyched now :D
I'm going to try LG, you got me going...
Is it hard to install.. Do you think LG won't work on Fedora, why?
Where can I find more info

Thanks

I got it working in FC2 using these instructions:
https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/lg3dgettingstarted.html

Pretty nice, makes you wonder why it hasn't been done before.

Me too. I got it working in window mode only.. :)
I got problems with full screen...

It's great, I love it

linuxmad
8th July 2004, 09:37 PM
I think you need to try it in "session" mode, but as i said before i was not able to play it in that mode on Fedora Core 2... at least for the moment.
Remember that you can use the xterminal only in this mode, therefore in "dev" mode you are not able to run any apps except for those already in the desktop. ;)

wow, impressive thing! i've manage to run it in fullscreen in fc2, solution was setting a symlink called "XF86Config" to xorg.conf, and i had to go root before starting, but then it worked.

unfortunatly trying to start opera (didn't really work) it messed up my preferences, but it looked at least very nice!

Yep, that works...
Thanks shtik

LG is really unstable :(

I will have to try it out when i get home... thanks shtik...
LG is really unstable ...
ghaefb... remember that LG is in it´s ealier stages of development... still i agree with you... and for the moment it is completely unusable, but there is a long road to go from here... hope we can get where we all want....

I have managed to get metisse to work. Apparently, my 512 of ram isnt' enough, the windows are jerky when moved and the menus are SLOW.

ghaefb
9th July 2004, 02:04 AM
It's not your RAM, I have 512 and it work's really fast.
Must be your graphic card or drivers for graphic card...

linuxmad
9th July 2004, 03:21 AM
What video card are you using ??
My card is a Nvidia FX 5700 with the latest 1.0.6106 drivers and i also have 512 MB Ram. Metisse runs perfectly with this. I also tried a P3 with 256 MB Ram and a old Riva TNT 32mb and it runs very much alike. :)
So ...are you sure you are running on accelerated 3D drivers???

Picomp314
9th July 2004, 03:48 AM
I overclocked my card with NVclock, increasing the ram speed by 10 Mhz gave me such a performance boost...
ive decided i don't relaly like metisse all that much, it has so much potential eye-candy wise; for now it fails to deliver
i am interested in this Looking Glass however...

setting a symlink called "XF86Config" to xorg.conf

...I tried out this solution pointed by shtik but... it doesn't work and i get the same error as before "no core pointer". Just to be sure, this was what i did:
ln -s xorg.conf XF86Config.conf
.. but simply doesn't work...

djf_jeff
9th July 2004, 09:44 AM
do :

ln -s xorg.conf XF86Config

Remove the .conf after XF86Config

linuxmad
9th July 2004, 10:08 AM
My mistake.. not "XF86Config.conf" but "XF86Config"...
Sorry.... :) :)

I have a Nvidia GeForce MX4000 with 64 meg of ram

Varkk
9th July 2004, 03:04 PM
I would guess that is why it is slow, that is the GF4mx GPU isn't it? From memory they are about on par with a GF2 in performance. Although looking at the sys reqs that video card should be fine, what is your CPU? It seems strange that it appears to be more CPU intensive tyhan GPU intensive from the suggested system requirements.

And a few files missing. I don't know.

This Metisse thing seems like nothing more than a "toy". Exactly what does it do that can't be done with things that already exist in FC3 (such as virtual desktops, cascading windows, etc)? Besides, it looks like it would be hell on my eyes since I cannot stand transparencies as they are quite useless too.
