Dead Internet?

Hi There!

Bit of a Linux Newbie here I'm afraid, but hope someone can help!

I access the internet courtesy of a broadband router which integrates an ADSL modem. Assigns IP addresses via DHCP, and then allows net access through a NAT system.

All works absolutely fine under Windows, however when using Fedora Core 2 (fresh installation, done nothing to it at all), it absolutely refuses to go to web sites. I can use GAIM extremely slowly to access MSN messenger, but it takes 10 mins to sign in, and ages between messages. When browsing with Mozilla it won't open any pages at all, just times out.

Any suggestions?

you need dns servers. use system-config-network to configue the network. for the first dns put the name of your router, and then any others your isp gave you.

Yes, you have to apply correct DNS servers in system-config-network.

Under DNS tab add your ISP server IP to Primary DNS and to Secondary DNS text field.
I think your primary DNS shouldn't be your router, but ISP. This works for me.
I have the same situation at home.

I have a Dlink 524 router and I set primary DNS to the router. Which router do you have?

Hi there!

Thanks for the tips guys... going from the first post - pinging my router (192.168.1.1) works absolutely fine - get a return. Pinging google does exactly the same - and I can view Google in Mozilla without a problem. Ping ANY other website that comes to mind (e.g.www.fedoraforum.org or fedora.redhat.com) and the operation just times out.

I've tried entering the router IP under the DNS settings, and the ones provided by my ISP and still no luck at all.

Any other suggestions?

BTW - IPv6 is enabled if that makes a difference (although having said that exactly the same problem can be produced if it's disabled)

try setting your MTU to a lower value
