Hi all,
looking around the net, it looked like vmware server 2 beta was the only one that could possibly run on fedora 9 beta.
so I downloaded that and installed and ran the config, it complained about ipv6, which i then removed and ran config again. Rebooted and Im still not able to access the web based configuration page of vmware.
any one tried this ?
thanks.

I think the any any is for vmware-server 1.x --I don't remember how I installed 2, but I do remember thinking it was sort of vista-ish--that is, much worse than what it was replacing.

Came across one post somewhere saying that that person had tried 2 I think on ubuntu with the 116 patch and he got it working except with the host to guest network...
Im digging around still....

Please keep this post updated, if you don't mind. I suspect that as 2.0 becomes more popular, it will be useful. Darn, I know I did install it, but it was so long ago, and I took it out shortly afterwards.
Do you really like that new java/web interface? Judging from their forums, there's a lot about the beta that others besides myself dislike.

:) I have not had it run at all, how would I know if I like it.
Yeah ive been through all the bad reviews too, but I could not get 1.0x working either on my core 9, if anyones done that, I would be glad to skip 2.0

Ah, good point. If it doesn't work, you won't know. :)
I haven't tried the older version on 9. I've been using VirtualBox. Is there any chance that will work for you?
If you do decide on VirtualBox, don't get the RPM. Ermm, it won't install on F9. :) Get the generic Linux version which is a shell script called something.run. Then just do sh whatever.run. It might complain about a libstc++ library. If so, just do yum install whatever name it asks for and yum is smart enough to give you the equivalent that will work.

i know this thread is about vmware server, but there is a trick to modify the "vmmon" file in vmware workstation so it will build properly on the kernel. also I have successfully installed vmware workstation 6.5beta on fedora 9 which is available via Vmware's website, the only thing that does not work is vmnet's... however nat and bridged networking work.

I need to have some VM app running asap, so Im switching to VirtualBox for the time being...thanks scottro...but will be working on VM 2 or atleast 1.x to run on core 9. Will keep this page updated with whatever I find.

Ok, just note one more thing though--virtualbox uses nat networking by default while vmware uses bridged. So, your VBox guest will have a 10. something address and won't be able to ping, but you will be able to reach the Internet, ssh to the host, etc.
If you decide you want to do bridging with VirtualBox, I have a page on it at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/vboxbridge.html
Depending upon your uses of the VM app, the default NAT networking will probably be fine.
Did I say anywhere in this thread that if you're installing on Fedora 9, rather than 8, grab the generic tarball rather than the RPM from the VirtualBox site. (Too lazy to scroll up and see if I said that here or only on the testing mailing list where there's another virtualbox thread.) :)

I got vmware-server 2 running on Fc9 Beta with the following kernel:
2.6.25-0.218.rc8.git7.fc9.i686.PAE
I think you will have to install the following apps in order for things to compile right:
yum -y install xinetd gcc gcc-gnat libgcc gcc-objc gcc-objc++ gcc-gfortran gcc-c++
I ran into the vsock issue as well, but I just ignored it and kept right on through the install. I fired up the web GUI and the console ran ran too slow for me. The system I am using is a P4 3ghz with 2Gigs or Ram. vmware server beta 2 was unusable for my system! now I'm trying to get vmware-server-1.0.5 working with the any-any-update116 drivers. So far the modules will not compile. Next on the list is vmware-player. :(

Did you find out something new about this issue? I upgraded on F9 yesterday and now I have kernel 2.6.25-1 and I'm trying to compile modules for vmware-server-1.0.5 and still with no success.
vmware-any-any-update116 didn't help :(

I found the right solution for kernel version 2.6.25-1 and vmware-server-1.0.5 :)
You have to apply changes described here http://communities.vmware.com/message/863066 (post from Ehud on Feb 27, 2008 3:17 PM) into module sources patched by vmware-any-any-update116 (probably 115 is enough - I don't know - I did it in 116) and that's enough ;)
Now vmware-server is running on Fedora 9 for me ;)
Many thanks to Ehud!!!

I think your problem is related to:
http://kramfs.com/2008/07/13/vmware...he-vsock-module
the only difference is that it was successfully tested on Ubuntu but you can try. It's about how to compile and get the vsock module working...
