Wireless doesn't work after resuming from suspend

Howdy,

I have Fedora 8 i386 installed on a Dell XPS M1330 with Intel wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection (rev 61) wifi card.

This only started happening recently, so I can only guess that it's the result of an update.

When I'm done using my laptop, I suspend it by clicking the battery/charge icon near the clock and clicking suspend, or if I'm running on battery I just shut the lid.

When I open the lid the system resumes and after several minutes the network manager still shows a red x

service network restart doesn't get wifi working, I have to reboot the computer.

Occasionally, when I resume from a suspend the wifi will work, but the majority of the time I have to reboot.

The "network" service that you are restarting won't have ant effect on NetworkManager. They are two different things.

When it happens again you might want to try:

service NetworkManager restart

if I read the signs correctly, that unloads the firmware from your card and then starts it from the beginning again

Note that the capitals in NetworkManager are important, networkmanager won't work.

I have the same problem. It's not related to Network Manager. Even without it, when I try to raise the interface from command line, it says "No such device".

Have you actually had your wireless connecsion working under Linux?

If you have NetworkManager running it will cause problems with running from the command line.

The various methods of controling a wireless card in Fedora should only be used by themselves. In combination they cause problems.

I assume from your post that you have the same 4965 card as the OP.

What does:

iwconfig

and

iwlist wlan0 scan

from a full root command prompt show.

Yes, the card works - I am connected to the internet with it now (had to restart the PC to get it working again though).

The card is Belkin, with a Realtek chipset. Shows as RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI in "network management". But I don't think it's a problem with the card itself, it some setting that's missing that should tell Fedora to wake it up together with the other devices (btw, I have a similar issue with the IDE disks).

I am having the exact same problem with an intel abg card. Everything used to work just find until about a week ago. I assume it's an update also. Has anyone filed a bug in bugzilla yet?

The funny part is I am running Fedora because it's the only distro that had suspend work properly with NetworkManager.

Maybe I should try wicd out and see how that works.

My wireless has been working fine but just recently (I too assume it was after an update) it has stopped working after resume.

Some more info:

Before resuming, clicking on the NetworkManager icon I can see mine and my neighbour's networks listed. After resuming, I only see my neighbour's. If I click the "Connect to Other Wireless Network" and manually specify my network it appears to find it but never connects.

Back when it used to work fine, I would sometimes have to wait 30sec - 1min for it to rediscover my network (it is always there immediately after reboot). But other times it would be there immediately after resuming. This seems similar behaviour except that it never finds it. Related?

My laptop has an LED to represent the wi-fi state, this light did not used to light up or flash when the wireless card was active or used. Since the update that caused my 'after suspend' issue the light now turns on when the card is active and flashes during activity.

Long ago I used the ipw3945 drivers from freshrpms and these would activate this light, but when switching to the opensource iwl3945-firmware (currently ver 2.14.1.5-2) this light never worked. This leads me to think that the problem could be caused due to an update to the iwl3945 driver (?)...

I hope we can get it sorted soon, very annoying.. I might roll back to the previous drivers and give them ago.

I am running a fedora 8 box, with the network manager 0.7.0 on an thinkpad x61, which worked great sofar. but yesterday my wlan refused to work any longer: and i wasn't able to find any wlan's in my surrounding any more.

Hi,

I am facing the same problem. The wireless net is connected immediately when I boot my system. But if I resume after either a suspend or a hibernate, I am unable to connect. It shows my home wireless router and even my neighbours, but it does not connect.

Restarting network manager didnt help. Then I followed this approach. I killed nm-applet, restarted network manager and then after some time (a minute or two) then started nm-applet. Then it is connecting most of the time. (Sometimes it even fails) But the entire setup is annoying. Nowadays, I am rather shutting down my laptop (acer aspire 5630) rather than suspending or hibernating...

Is there any better fix than the what I am following?

Here's my ugly workaround that's working for me.

When I wake from suspend, I open terminal and su - to root.

I then type:

modprobe -r iwl3945
modprobe -i iwl3945

which basically unloads and reloads the network driver.

Soon as I do that, NetworkManager connects right up.

I want to see if there is some way to incorporate this into my resume from suspend script that runs.
