View Full Version : Is KDE getting good treatment in F9 Beta?

I want to use Fedora again, I really do, but I've come to hate how KDE & Gnome seem so intertwined in Fedora. Like in F8, I'd install it, choose KDE, yet it seems like half (or more) of Gnome gets installed as well.
I understand some Gnome files will get installed as dependencies, like knetworkmanager needs networkmanager (although it seems like knet has been broken for awhile), but there are way more than just a few dependencies getting installed.
I would like to know what any KDE user currently running the F9 beta thinks about it. Is KDE more separate from Gnome in the current beta? Can I install it without having Gnome added as a bonus option when I click on "Sessions" at the log-in screen.
Anybody that really likes KDE and prefers it above all others will understand what I mean.

Judging from the total lack of response. I guess not.

Have you tried the F-8 KDE Live CD? That would be a good idea of how the F-9 KDE version would work. I'd guess that the Live CD installer would be the cleanest way to get KDE.

This is not F9 spesific, but you could try to install the kde live-cd. As far as I can tell, the kde version you get then is without much of the gnome stuff. You could also try this guide (http://fedoranews.org/cms/node/1446) if you have allready installed using the DVD. It worked for me in F7

Don't bother with live CD's. They are a huge pain in the arse IMHO.
KDE4.0 is the future. With F9 you CAN NOT use 3.5.x
I am running KDE 4.0.2 with F9 and its come a long way since the original release.... but I still consider it to not meet my needs and continue to use gnome primarilly.

Check out this interview:

which helps explain the current status of KDE 4 and F9. I've been running the F9 Alpha and now the Beta code - many issues have been resolved, but it is a little rough around the edges. There are still issues which need to be resolved upstream; and some won't be addressed until KDE4.1 (which is scheduled for release mid year). I think F9 KDE4 will definitely be a solid and usable release, but some may prefer to stay with F8 until KDE4.1 is available.
I think the release of KDE4 had raised the interest in KDE in general; and that this interest will also spill over to Fedora as a KDE distro as more and more folks check it out and begin using it. More people using translates to more feature requests and bug reports which will improve the distribution for everybody.

KDE is working fine but it very slow.. I think after long years of upgrade in gnome(they never had any good GUI interface than KDE) this tine gnome is going to rock fedora users. This issue of fedora 9 renamed as gnome 9

until very late in the F9 development cycle, both kernel and kde builds were built with verbose debugging enabled, which slowed things down alot. If you haven't updated recently do so, you'll be happy with the results.

i'm happy with kde on FC9, thanks to people like rex :) My submitted bugs got fixed! BUT I do really miss knetworkmanager (I know why..). But of course this cannot be blamed to Fedora ...
BTW rex, will kde 4.1 be in F9 in june?

Soon after that yeah, that's the plan (foregoing any kde-4.0 -> kde-4.1 upgrade show-stoppers).

kde4 works pretty smooth in F9 i have been keeping my beta up2date and it seems very slick and responsive i dont use it nonstop yet as there are some rough edges but this is not a Fedora issue but a KDE issue and those will get worked out as time goes on. I thought awhile back there was talk about their being a 3.5 series install disk as well as a kde4 install disk but haven't heard much about it since then though so you may have a choice on what kde version you install instead of being forced to use kde4.
