I am having trouble with my refresh rates on my laptop. I finally got the res. set right but now it has a "chattery" "ghosting?" effect whenever anything changes, ie. open new window, move the mouse pointer.
I am assuming that it is the refresh rates because I can change how bad it ghosts by where I set the rate. I could spend all day tweaking the config file and logging out and back in (I'm new its the only way I know how) or just ask for help.
I have tried to get support from HP but they have not been much help yet, still trying. I am sure there is someone out there that has done something similar to this and gotten good results. :D
So everybody who has made their laptop display work right please post your model, refresh rates, res, and any other settings/options that may be helpful to me or anyone else who could benefit.
I am currently at: 1024x768, HS: 50.0 - 60.5, VR 60.0

It's too bad you can't get the right numbers from HP. You might try a google search for your model and look at the specs listed on some of the retail sites.
I have a Sony Vaio (PCG-V505DX) with a 12.1" LCD supporting up to 1024x768. I am using the following settings:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Sony LCD"
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.4
VertRefresh 50 - 70
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
I have had some odd "ghost" effects lately too, after I installed the ATI firegl drivers and started tweaking my xorg.conf. I found that disabling the framebuffer fixed it (boot with "nofb" in the kernel line). You might give that a try as well.

I got the Horizontal refresh from HP, there email support team was prety quick, I might add. They said it was 60kHz, I didn't have a lot of luck with that. However I did boot with Knoppix and used the refresh range that it used and I got it back to a full size screen. I still have the ghosting problems, maybe not as bad.
Will you please post your kernel line (I'm still prety new with this). Is this the arguments that I find in GRUB?

Yes, it is the line from grub.conf. Here is the default FC2T3 configuration on my box:
title Fedora Core (2.6.5-1.358)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
In grub, if you select Fedora Core and press e, you will see something similar. You can select the kernel line and press e again to edit it and then (I think) press ESC to end editing and b to boot. 'rhgb' is for Red Hat graphical boot and 'quiet' just hides a lot of kernel messages. If you add 'nofb' to the end of this line, it will use a standard console rather than a framebuffer device. I'm no expert on the framebuffer stuff but I think the framebuffer driver for my Radeon is a still little quirky so I normally disable it. I had to do that on FC1 to even boot the installer.

I added the 'nofb' to the kernel line in grub.conf and it didn't take the first time so I used nano to force it.
I still have the problems. Is there any other options? It is like I'm trying to watch a tv with bad reception. I'm going to have to switch distros if I can't get this to work.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about X can help out as well, but the next thing I would check is the video card driver. If you are maybe having trouble with the specific driver for your card, try the generic "vesa" driver.

The vesa driver works but is definately not ideal. I'm happy to have no more ghosting however the image qualith is kinda low the res (lines per inch, dpi, or what ever) is off. If anyone knows how to change this please post.
BTW thanks for all your help

I've been struggling with this as well (Dell Latitude C800) and finally found the LCD Panel 1600x1200 gave me good quality.
