I am the root user of the computer and when i try to copy files to the drive it tells me I can't for one of two reasons. either it says i have not enough space, which is incorrect, or it tells me i do not have permission. how can i obtain permission.

What file system is the jump drive? Most likely it is not being mounted as read/write, or perhaps even the write lock switch on your flash drive is on? Check the switch or try and mount it manually.
