Thanks for all the help to date.
Just one thing.
If Gnome is default, can it be unselcted, and KDE chosen as the desktop of choice.
You see I don't really wish to install Gnome.
I much prefer simply KDE.
Much thanks

ps: Sorry for my mucking up the Grub question. I'm not keeping Mandrake. I'm replacing it with FC2 and so yes Grub will be overwritten.

It is possible to install only kde if you select "custom install" and uncheck all gdm options and select only kde but, you might need some gdm libraries.

I would not recommend the installation of KDE only. You might need to run some programs that require Gnome libraries. (Note, you can run Gnome apps, e.g., gdesklets within KDE, or vice versa.) I would install both and make KDE the default desktop as well as display manager. To do it, as su, edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop so that
DESKTOP="GNOME"
is replaced by
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"

So switchdesk only changes the desktop but not the displaymanager?

That's the login display manager, actually. The switchdesk utility does indeed only switch the user's default preference.
And I second the notion of installing both - I primarily use KDE, but (for example) I much prefer GAIM over anything else I've tried. That's the nice thing about Linux systems - you can not only have your cake and eat it, it comes with extra fudgy icing!
