View Full Version : Best Free Games...

Was bored today and went on downloading some free first-person shooters out there. Was actually surprised at a few that I found that were quite good. Being a huge fan of Quake III, I ran into OpenArena (http://www.openarena.ws/). It is, essentially, Quake III with new textures, models, sounds, et cetera. The only thing that separates it from Quake III is the maps (which have to be different for legal reasons). Otherwise, game play is exactly the same. It still has a ways to go, but it's something that's very interesting. Might become obsolete with the release of QuakeZero, though...
Warsow (http://www.warsow.net/) was another game that I came across. Based on a modified Quake II engine, it's something that's takes an interesting turn. It's a cel-shaded, first-paced, trick-jump-oriented, tournament-focused first-person shooter. Was fun to play for a bit, but I haven't gotten into it fully yet. Will have to give it more play-time at some point; doesn't run great on my laptop.
Obviously there's also America's Army (http://americasarmy.com/), probably the most successful (I think without a doubt, but don't have the numbers to confirm) free FPS. I haven't been in the AA scene for a while, but I plan to get back in when I get my iMac (I no longer have my gaming desktop, so I am using a laptop now...not the best for gaming).
So...the reason of this post? Just wanted to know of some other free games that people enjoy. I've gone on this mission recently to stop pirating software and to get rid of my pirated software (for instance, uninstalled Photoshop CS2 from my Windows install, and installed GIMP to replace it; got rid of my cracked copy of WinRAR and installed 7zip instead; that kinda stuff). Fell free to post about non-Linux games as well. Though it seems that most free games (or FPSs at least) are compatible with Linux, not all are; so please don't pass up mentioning a game just because it doesn't have Linux support.
Just wanted to hear about everyone's opinions on the various free games out there (also, don't feel limited to FPSs; that's just my favorite genre).

Let me get this straight, you don't have your gaming rig and you pretend on gaming on an iMac? (which is essentially a laptop with a much bigger screen :p... I'm joking, by the way)
At any rate, like Hlingler points out, of the available FPS there's also (besides Nexuiz) other fine shooter games out there... One distinction, though, when you say free FPS you mean it as in gratis or as in Free software (free of cost, source code freely and unrestrictedly available)? At any rate, other fine FPS's are:
Tremolous - A Team Fortress-like game with a twist. Think of Aliens Vs Predator... has different game play depending if you are on the Aliens team or the Humans team. Interesting game and fun game play. It is available from the repos for at least i386 and x86_64.
Sauerbraten and Cube - two very nice games (or rather game engines). They have both a multiplayer mode and a single player mode style of game play, aesthetically speaking (IMVHO) they resemble a bit the Serious Sam 1 games (without the Egypt theme, or "sunny" maps). It is NOT available in the repos, but you can download it from the project's site. Currently it is only available for i386 (I'm not sure if it has a PPC port). It DOES run on x86_64, provided you have the necessary SDL dependencies covered (Mixer, Image, Network) for i386.
World of Padman - Q3A with a twist... A comic-book style kind of FPS game, where you "paint" your opponents, think Gotcha with funny characters and playing as miniaturized characters in human-sized rooms. I have not played it much, though. I'm not sure if it is available in the repos, and I'm not sure of the architectures it supports.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein's Enemy Territory - Not a free (as in software) game, but freely available, nonetheless... I don't think it needs further explaining, it is a VERY famous game.
Those are the ones I can think off the top of my head.

Warsow has a licensing problem with the game assets, I believe.
Phoxis. I suppose you mean Counter Strike, and no, there is no native Counter Strike for Linux. It was rumored that Valve may have jumped into the Linux bandwagon when last year some one found in their site an announcement for Linux programmers to port games. Nothing more has been known of them.

A few games that I enjoy playing are Frozen Bubble (http://www.frozen-bubble.org/), Super Tux (http://supertux.lethargik.org/) and Secret Maryo Chronicles (http://www.secretmaryo.org/).
Frozen Bubble and Super Tux are available through the standard Fedora repos and Secret Maryo Chronicles is available from Dribble (http://dribble.org.uk/).

I've been playing with vavoom (http://vavoom-engine.com/) on my PS3. It's a Doom/Heretic/Hexen/Strife source port which runs surprisingly well given the shortcomings of the PS3 as a Linux gaming machine. It runs about 25-30 FPS in software mode at 960x720x32.
It gives Doom a different feel with "modern" FPS controls (to me that's WASD + mouselook), plus there are other enhancements. The full versions of the wad files from Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen, and Strife all run on it. I haven't played Strife much, but enjoyed all the others immensely "back in the day." :D
Rocks'n'Diamonds is a good "small game." And Blob Wars is rather strange... ;)
Also, Pingus, FreedroidRPG, Supertux are good. And when I get tired of playing all those games with that stupid penguin I just whack (http://www.birdcheck.co.uk/whackthepenguin.htm) him instead. :p It is hard for me to get over 500, though -- I think you have to whack him so his beak doesn't stick in the snow and he skids along for a bit. :D EDIT: Wooh 588.8 !!! err... OK, I'm off to play Rock Band. :)

Oh that's just wrong! You knew I'd have to sit here whacking that penguin until I got it! :p Can't beat that score, I think ...

I think that's the most it will do. Fortunately for me, there's no skill involved in the game, you just have to keep doing it until it happens :)

If you installed Fedora 8 from a CD, then you probably have a lot of games on there. If you go to Applications - add/remove software, you can search any game you want. I'm currently downloading a few that were already ment6ioned, by using this method. Here are some more games:

AssaultCube is a good game that has not been mentioned. It is not in the Repository though.
