For some reason, nvidia drivers crashed my box. Here is a copy of /var/log/messages (http://home.comcast.net/~jale2ice/nvidia.txt) with nvidia written all over it. I'm not too sure what to make of all this. It has only happened once since I installed it (Saturday morning). I'm somewhat a n00bie and no testing experience. (I have to start somewhere :D )
ASUS A7N8X
AMD Athlon 2500+
512MB DDR PC2700
NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5900 ULTRA
MAXTOR 60GB HD
Fedora Core 2 test 3
w/ 2.6.5 kernel from kernel.org
(compiled to get nvidia drivers to work, followed this howto (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=1702)
Someone please help!

Here's your help.. sadly it consists of:
1) you've got bad memory.. either main board or video card..
or 2) noone has a clue, perhaps it is a real driver bug

If you have another video card to test with, or some extra ram to start swapping out, that would be a good way to start looking for the issue. Also, some people see change in just slowing down their FSB.
There are other posts on the forum about it.. search away.

Well, I know for a fact that my memory is fine. Just a few days ago I was running kernel ver 2.4.x with 5336 nvidia drivers and no lockups or crashes. Actually, this would be my first crash....
I'm reading all these posts and only see people with kernel 2.6.X having issues.... It maybe time to revert.

interesting...
I havent seen this problem before, I would make aguess that it has to do with the kernel config though.

Is there someone you can escalate this to? I would like a resolution for this. It seems that a lot of linux users have been faced with this problem without explanation. I hear that kernel devel people are pointing the finger @ nvidia for this, but no one is taking responsibility. Someone help us!!!

The more I think about it the more I think that it might have to do with the fact that you are running an FX 5900 Ultra, it might be not well supported in the current 5336 nvidia driver, combined with the brand new support for the 2.6 kernel series
Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you disabled REGPARM and 4KSTACKS??

I just recompiled kernel-2.6.6 and disabled those options....
We'll see what happens...

I tried installing the Nvidia drivers also...they say they complete but the splash screen does not appear...also with FC2T3 doesnt it use xorg.conf as its display settings file...i tried editing both the XFconfig and the xorg.conf file...and when i changed the appropiate settings in xorg...my comp. boots up but then crashes on X start and restarts....Ive been too lazy to recompile with the disabled settings...does any know if Nvidia will provide a driver with support for Nvidia 5900 Ultras using FC2?

They have not made an official statement (in fact I've seen nothing from an nVIDIA employee) but they rarely, if ever, say anything about the next driver until it is released. The new GPU is on the market and is not supported by the current driver... so a new one is expected (this is also about perfect for their typical 6 month release cycle).

s0lus: yes, my driver install also reported to have completed successfully, but with the (current) closed source nvidia binary having a kernel with 4kstacks and Regparm WILL NOT WORK.

The drivers on nVidia's site will not work with Fedora Core2 and they are aware of this. I read somewhere (redhat's site maybe) that nVidia plans on releasing a new driver after Core2 Final hits. I haven't seen an ETA on how long after they will release the new driver. You'll have to stick with the standard X.org driver for now.

I can assure you its not his RAM or his card. I had the same problem. I have a 5900 and i can tell you that the nvidia drivers worked GREAT on every distro EXEPT the FCTx releases (test 1 - 3)
in test 1 it was due to the SElinux settings. in test 2 - 3 it just did not work. The drivers fully support the nvidia card "5900" both ultra and regular.
Im hoping when i get home today and try FC2 it works.

Is this just for 5900, or older cards as well ?

It did the same thing on my GeForce 3 card.

RE: bad card.. it is quite possible his is bad.. just because your's worked previously does not rule that out. I do concede the likelihood that the driver fully supports the card (but there are a number of people on multiple distros that I have seen complain about it).
FC2 will be no different regarding the driver than the test releases.. until you recompile the kernel to be compatible -- just as was necessary in the tests.
